Chapter XXXV.--Immense is this reward. How shall we obtain it?

How blessed and wonderful, beloved, are the gifts of God! Life in immortality, splendour in righteousness, truth in perfect confidence, ¹ faith in assurance, self-control in holiness! And all these fall under the cognizance of our understandings [now]; what then shall those things be which are prepared for such as wait for Him? The Creator and Father of all worlds, ² the Most Holy, alone knows their amount and their beauty. Let us therefore earnestly strive to be found in the number of those that wait for Him, in order that we may share in His promised gifts. But how, beloved, shall this be done? If our understanding be fixed by faith towards God; if we earnestly seek the things which are pleasing and acceptable to Him; if we do the things which are in harmony with His blameless will; and if we follow the way of truth, casting away from us all unrighteousness and iniquity, along with all covetousness, strife, evil practices, deceit, whispering, and evil-speaking, all hatred of God, pride and haughtiness, vainglory and ambition. ³ For they that do such things are hateful to God; and not only they that do them, but also those that take pleasure in them that do them. ⁴ For the Scripture saith, "But to the sinner God said, Wherefore dost thou declare my statutes, and take my covenant into thy mouth, seeing thou hatest instruction, and castest my words behind thee? When thou sawest a thief, thou consentedst with ⁵ him, and didst make thy portion with adulterers. Thy mouth has abounded with wickedness, and thy tongue contrived ⁶ deceit. Thou sittest, and speakest against thy brother; thou slanderest ⁷ thine own mother's son. These things thou hast done, and I kept silence; thou thoughtest, wicked one, that I should be like to thyself. But I will reprove thee, and set thyself before thee. Consider now these things, ye that forget God, lest He tear you in pieces, like a lion, and there be none to deliver. The sacrifice of praise will glorify Me, and a way is there by which I will show him the salvation of God." ⁸

35. Kap. Groß ist Gottes Lohn.

1. Wie selig und wunderbar sind die Geschenke Gottes, Geliebte! 2. Leben in Unsterblichkeit, Glanz in Gerechtigkeit, Wahrheit in Freimut, Glaube in Vertrauen, Enthaltsamkeit in Heiligung; und dies alles ist schon in unser Verständnis gedrungen. 3. Was nun fürwahr ist denen bereitet, die ausharren? Der Schöpfer und Vater der Ewigkeit, der Allheilige selbst kennt die Größe und Schönheit dieser Güter. 4. Wir nun wollen kämpfen, damit wir erfunden werden in der Zahl derer, die ausharren, auf dass wir teilhaben an den versprochenen Gütern. 5. Wie aber wird das geschehen, Geliebte? Wenn unsere Gesinnung in Treue gefestigt ist gegen Gott, wenn wir nachstreben dem, was ihm angenehm und wohlgefällig ist, wenn wir tun, was seinem S. 49 heiligen Willen entspricht, wenn wir gehen auf dem Wege der Wahrheit, wenn wir wegwerfen von uns alles Unrecht und alle Schlechtigkeit, Habsucht, Streit, Bosheit und Hinterlist, Verleumdung und üble Nachrede, Hass gegen Gott, Aufgeblasenheit und Prahlerei, Eitelkeit und ungastliches Wesen. 6. Denn wer solches tut, ist bei Gott verhasst; aber nicht allein die solches tun, sondern auch die, welche ihnen zustimmen. 7. Es sagt nämlich die Schrift: „Zu dem Sünder aber sprach Gott: Warum zählst du meine Satzungen auf und warum nimmst du meinen Bund in deinen Mund? 8. Du hast die Zucht gehasst und hast meine Worte verworfen. Wenn du einen Dieb sähest, gingst du mit ihm, bei den Ehebrechern hattest du Anteil. Dein Mund ging über von Schlechtigkeit, und deine Zunge spann trügerische Tücke. Du setztest dich hin und sprachest gegen deinen Bruder, und dem Sohn deiner Mutter stelltest du eine Falle. 9. Das tatest du, und ich habe geschwiegen. Du nahmst an, Gottloser, dass ich dir gleich sei. 10. Ich werde dich überführen und dein Antlitz gegen dich kehren. 11. Beherziget dies, ihr Gottvergessenen, damit er euch nicht wegschleppe wie ein Löwe und niemand da sei, der rettet; ein Lobopfer wird mich ehren, und dort ist der Weg, den ich ihm zeigen will, das Heil Gottes“¹.
