Chapter VIII.--Continuation respecting repentance.

The ministers of the grace of God have, by the Holy Spirit, spoken of repentance; and the Lord of all things has himself declared with an oath regarding it, "As I live, saith the Lord, I desire not the death of the sinner, but rather his repentance;" ¹ adding, moreover, this gracious declaration, "Repent, O house of Israel, of your iniquity. ² Say to the children of My people, Though your sins reach from earth to heaven, and though they be redder ³ than scarlet, and blacker than sackcloth, yet if ye turn to Me with your whole heart, and say, Father! I will listen to you, as to a holy ⁴ people." And in another place He speaks thus: "Wash you, and become clean; put away the wickedness of your souls from before mine eyes; cease from your evil ways, and learn to do well; seek out judgment, deliver the oppressed, judge the fatherless, and see that justice is done to the widow; and come, and let us reason together. He declares, Though your sins be like crimson, I will make them white as snow; though they be like scarlet, I will whiten them like wool. And if ye be willing and obey Me, ye shall eat the good of the land; but if ye refuse, and will not hearken unto Me, the sword shall devour you, for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken these things." ⁵ Desiring, therefore, that all His beloved should be partakers of repentance, He has, by His almighty will, established [these declarations].

8. Kap. Gott selbst verspricht den Reuigen Vergebung.

1. Die Diener der Gnade Gottes haben durch den Heiligen Geist über die Buße geredet, 2. ja auch er selbst, der Gebieter über alle, hat über die Buße gesprochen unter einem Eidschwur: „So wahr ich lebe, spricht der Herr, ich will nicht den Tod des Sünders, sondern dass er Buße tue“¹; und er fügt den guten Rat hinzu: 3. „Haus Israel, bekehre dich von deiner Gottlosigkeit“². Sprich zu den Kindern meines Volkes: Wenn eure Sünden reichen von der Erde bis zum Himmel und wenn sie rot sind wie Scharlach und schwarz wie ein Bußsack und ihr euch aus ganzem Herzen zu mir bekehret und sprechet: „Vater“, dann werde ich euch erhören wie ein heiliges Volk³. 4. Und an einer anderen Stelle spricht er also: „Waschet und reiniget euch, entfernet eure Schlechtigkeit von euren Seelen vor meinen Augen. Lasset ab von eurer Bosheit, lernet Gutes tun, suchet gerecht zu sein, helfet den Unrecht Leidenden, seid ein Anwalt dem Waisenkind, und der Witwe verschaffet Recht! Dann kommt hierher, und wir wollen rechten miteinander, spricht der Herr. Und wenn eure Sünden sind wie Purpur, werde ich sie weiß machen wie Schnee, und wenn sie sind wie Scharlach, will ich sie weiß machen wie Wolle. Und wenn ihr guten Willen habt und auf mich höret, sollt ihr die Güter der Erde genießen; wenn ihr aber keinen guten Willen habt und nicht auf mich höret, wird das Schwert euch fressen. Der Mund des Herrn hat dies gesprochen"⁴. 5. Da er also wollte, dass alle seine Lieblinge teilhaben an der S. 31 Buße so bestärkte er sie mit seinem allmächtigen Willen.
