The First Epistle of Clement to the Corinthians

Chapter XLI.--Continuation of the Same Subject.

Let every one of you, brethren, give thanks ¹ to God in his own order, living in all good conscience, with becoming gravity, and not going beyond the rule of the ministry prescribed to him. Not in every place, brethren, are the daily sacrifices offered, or the peace-offerings, or the sin-offerings and the trespass-offerings, but in Jerusalem only. And even there they are not offered in any place, but only at the altar before the temple, that which is offered being first carefully examined by the high priest and the ministers already mentioned. Those, therefore, who do anything beyond that which is agreeable to His will, are punished with death. Ye see, ² brethren, that the greater the knowledge that has been vouchsafed to us, the greater also is the danger to which we are exposed.

41. Kap. Jeder halte sich in den Grenzen seines Amtes!

1. Jeder von uns, Brüder, soll in seinem Stande Gott danken, indem er sich ein gutes Gewissen bewahrt und die für seine Verrichtung festgesetzte Regel nicht übertritt, in würdigem Wandel. 2. Nicht an allen Orten, Brüder, werden Gott immerwährende Opfer oder Gelübdeopfer oder Sühnopfer oder Schuldopfer dargebracht, sondern nur in Jerusalem; aber auch dort wird nicht überall geopfert, sondern vor dem Heiligen am Altare, wobei die Opfergabe genau untersucht wird S. 53 durch den Oberpriester und die vorerwähnten Diener des Heiligtums. 3. Wer nun nicht seinem Willen entsprechend etwas tut, erleidet den Tod als gebührende Strafe. 4. Ihr sehet, Brüder, je größer die Erkenntnis ist, deren wir gewürdigt worden sind, um so größer ist auch die Gefahr, der wir ausgesetzt sind.
