Martyrium des Heiligen Polykarpos

18.

Angesichts des verbissenen Widerstands, den die Juden leisteten, gab der Hauptmann der Soldatenwache nach und verbrannte nach heidnischer Sitte den Leichnam des Polykarp mitten auf dem Scheiterhaufen. So konnten wir nachher wenigstens seine Gebeine sammeln, die uns mehr wert sind als edles Gestein und köstlicher als pures Gold. An einem würdigen Ort haben wir sie beigesetzt. Dort wollen wir, wenn es möglich ist (Gott gebe es), uns in Jubel und Freude versammeln, um den Jahrtag seines Martyriums, seinen Geburtstag für den Himmel, zu feiern zum Gedächtnis aller, die vor uns den Kampf bestanden, und zugleich als Einübung und Vorbereitung für alle, die ihn in Zukunft kämpfen werden.

The Encyclical Epistle of the Church at Smyrna Concerning the Martyrdom of the Holy Polycarp

Chapter XVIII.--The body of Polycarp is burned.

The centurion then, seeing the strife excited by the Jews, placed the body ¹ in the midst of the fire, and consumed it. Accordingly, we afterwards took up his bones, as being more precious than the most exquisite jewels, and more purified ² than gold, and deposited them in a fitting place, whither, being gathered together, as opportunity is allowed us, with joy and rejoicing, the Lord shall grant us to celebrate the anniversary ³ of his martyrdom, both in memory of those who have already finished their course, ⁴ and for the exercising and preparation of those yet to walk in their steps.
