Chap. X.

And as I walked along with him, I was full of joy, beholding so many excellent things. And the Shepherd said to me, "Go and bring unslaked lime and fine-baked clay, that I may fill up the forms of the stones that were taken and thrown into the building; for everything about the tower must be smooth." And I did as he commanded me, and brought it to him. "Assist me," he said, "and the work will soon be finished." He accordingly filled up the forms of the stones that were returned to the building, and commanded the places around the tower to be swept and to be cleaned; and the virgins took brooms and swept the place, and carried all the dirt out of the tower, and brought water, and the ground around the tower became cheerful and very beautiful. Says the Shepherd to me, "Everything has been cleared away; if the lord of the tower come to inspect it, he can have no fault to find with us." Having spoken these words, he wished to depart; but I laid hold of him by the wallet, and began to adjure him by the Lord that he would explain what he had showed me. He said to me, "I must rest a little, and then I shall explain to you everything; wait for me here until I return." I said to him, "Sir, what can I do here alone?" "You are not alone," he said, "for these virgins are with you." "Give me in charge to them, then," I replied. The Shepherd called them to him, and said to them, "I entrust him to you until I come," and went away. And I was alone with the virgins; and they were rather merry, but were friendly to me, especially the four more distinguished of them.

10. Kap. Die Reinigung des Platzes beim Turm.

1. Als ich so mit ihm ging, war ich sehr erfreut, als ich sah, wie gut dies war. Der Hirte aber sprach zu mir: „Geh und bringe mir Kalk und kleine Scherben, damit ich die Hohlräume, die durch die Wegnahme der zum Bau verwendeten Steine entstanden waren, ausfülle; denn es muss alles rings um den Turm eben sein.“ 2. Ich tat nach seinem Befehle und brachte ihm die Sachen. „Hilf mir“, sprach er, [„und das Werk wird bald vollendet sein“]. Dann füllte er die Formen der Steine, die in den Bau gekommen waren, aus und ließ den Platz rings um den Turm aufräumen und reinigen. 3. Die Jungfrauen nahmen Besen zur Hand und kehrten, trugen allen Unrat vom Turme fort, sprengten Wasser aus, und so bekam der Platz beim Turme ein freundliches und gar gefälliges Aussehen. 4. Jetzt sagte der Hirte zu mir: „Alles ist gereinigt; wenn der Herr zur Besichtigung S. 267 des Turmes kommt, hat er keinen Grund, uns etwas vorzuhalten.“ Nach diesen Worten wollte er weggehen. 5. Ich aber hielt ihn an seiner Tasche fest und begann, ihn beim Herrn zu beschwören, dass er mir das erkläre, was er mir gezeigt hatte. Er sagte zu mir: „Im Augenblick habe ich keine Zeit; aber ich werde dir alles erklären. Warte hier auf mich, bis ich komme.“ 6. Ich erwiderte: „Herr, was soll ich hier tun, wenn ich allein bin.“ „Du bist nicht allein; denn diese Jungfrauen sind bei dir.“ „So übergib mich ihnen“, bat ich. Da rief sie der Hirte heran und sagte ihnen: „Ich empfehle euch diesen Mann, bis ich wiederkomme“ Und er ging weg. 7. Ich aber war allein mit den Jungfrauen; sie waren recht heiter und sehr freundlich zu mir, besonders die vier stattlicheren von ihnen.
