Dialogue of Justin, Philosopher and Martyr, with Trypho, a Jew

Chapter CXXIX.--That is confirmed from other passages of Scripture.

"And now I shall again recite the words which I have spoken in proof of this point. When Scripture says, The Lord rained fire from the Lord out of heaven,' the prophetic word indicates that there were two in number: One upon the earth, who, it says, descended to behold the cry of Sodom; Another in heaven, who also is Lord of the Lord on earth, as He is Father and God; the cause of His power and of His being Lord and God. Again, when the Scripture records that God said in the beginning, Behold, Adam has become like one of Us,' ¹ this phrase, like one of Us,' is also indicative of number; and the words do not admit of a figurative meaning, as the sophists endeavour to affix on them, who are able neither to tell nor to understand the truth. And it is written in the book of Wisdom: If I should tell you daily events, I would be mindful to enumerate them from the beginning. The Lord created me the beginning of His ways for His works. From everlasting He established me in the beginning, before He formed the earth, and before He made the depths, and before the springs of waters came forth, before the mountains were settled; He begets me before all the hills.' " ²

When I repeated these words, I added: "You perceive, my hearers, if you bestow attention, that the Scripture has declared that this Offspring was begotten by the Father before all things created; and that which is begotten is numerically distinct from that which begets, any one will admit."

CXXIX.

1 Permettez-moi de reproduire ici les témoignages déjà cités comme des preuves de cette vérité. Lorsque l'Esprit saint dit :

« Le Seigneur fit tomber du ciel par le Seigneur une pluie de feu, »

il nous montre bien ici deux personnes distinctes; l'une sur la terre, descendue pour entendre la clameur élevée de Sodome; l'autre dans le ciel, c'est-à-dire le maître du maître qui se montrait sur la terre, le Dieu et père qui lui communique sa puissance, et le fait Seigneur et Dieu. 2 Lorsque l'Ecriture rapporte que Dieu dit au commencement :

« Voici qu'Adam a été fait à la ressemblance de l'un de nous, »

elle indique encore clairement un nombre de personnes distinctes; ce n'est point ici une métaphore, comme veulent l'entendre les sophistes et ceux qui ne peuvent dire ni comprendre la vérité, 3 mais voici ce que nous lisons dans le livre de la Sagesse :

« Je vous annoncerai ce qui arrive dans le temps, je raconterai ce qui s'est fait depuis le commencement des siècles ; le Seigneur m'a créé au commencement de ses voies, avant ses œuvres; j'étais dans le principe avant les siècles; la terre n'était pas, ni les abîmes, et j'étais engendré. Il m'engendra avant les sources, avant les montagnes, avant les collines. »

4 Je m'adressai ensuite à mes auditeurs : Mes amis, leur dis-je, si vous m'avez écouté, vous avez compris que l'Ecriture déclare formellement que Dieu le père engendra son fils avant toutes les choses créées; or, vous avouerez tous que celui qui est engendré est une personne distincte de celui qui l'engendre.
