À Autolyque

I.

Dans la conférence que nous avons eue ensemble il y a quelques jours, mon cher Autolyque, je vous ai fait l'exposé de ma religion, vous vouliez savoir quel est le Dieu que je sers, j'ai dû vous répondre, et vous avez prêté à mes paroles une oreille attentive. Nous nous sommes retirés plus amis que jamais, quoique vous m'eussiez d'abord traité un peu durement ; car vous devez vous rappeler que vous accusiez notre doctrine de folie. Puisque vous m'en avez vous-même prié, je veux aujourd'hui, malgré mon peu d'habileté, vous démontrer dans ce petit livre, l'inutilité de vos efforts contre la vérité et la folie de vos superstitions. J'exposerai même sous vos regards, pour mieux vous convaincre, les témoignages tirés de vos propres historiens, que vous lisez sans doute, mais que peut-être vous ne comprenez pas encore.

Theophilus to Autolycus

Chapter I.--Occasion of Writing This Book.

When we had formerly some conversation, my very good friend Autolycus, and when you inquired who was my God, and for a little paid attention to my discourse, I made some explanations to you concerning my religion; and then having bid one another adieu, we went with much mutual friendliness each to his own house, although at first you had borne somewhat hard upon me. For you know and remember that you supposed our doctrine was foolishness. As you then afterwards urged me to do, I am desirous, though not educated to the art of speaking, of more accurately demonstrating, by means of this tractate, the vain labour and empty worship in which you are held; and I wish also, from a few of your own histories which you read, and perhaps do not yet quite understand, to make the truth plain to you.
