Chapter XXIII.--The Truth of the Account in Genesis.

Man, therefore, God made on the sixth day, and made known this creation after the seventh day, when also He made Paradise, that he might be in a better and distinctly superior place. And that this is true, the fact itself proves. For how can one miss seeing that the pains which women suffer in childbed, and the oblivion of their labours which they afterwards enjoy, are sent in order that the word of God may be fulfilled, and that the race of men may increase and multiply? ¹ And do we not see also the judgment of the serpent,--how hatefully he crawls on his belly and eats the dust,--that we may have this, too, for a proof of the things which were said aforetime?

XXIII.

Dieu créa l'homme le sixième jour, mais il ne manifesta sa création qu'après le septième, lorsqu'il eut préparé le paradis, afin de lui donner le meilleur et le plus beau des séjours. La vérité de tout ce récit se manifeste clairement d'elle-même. Ne voyons-nous pas, en effet, que si la femme éprouve de si grandes douleurs au moment de l'enfantement, et si elle les oublie aussitôt après, c'est tout à la fois pour accomplir la parole de Dieu et contribuer à l'accroissement du genre humain ? Ne voyons-nous pas encore que si le serpent est ainsi en horreur, s'il rampe sur sa poitrine et s'il se nourrit de terre, c'est afin de confirmer la vérité de tout ce que nous avons dit !
