Theophilus to Autolycus

Chapter XXXIII.--Profane History Gives No Account of These Matters.

Who, then, of those called sages, and poets, and historians, could tell us truly of these things, themselves being much later born, and introducing a multitude of gods, who were born so many years after the cities, and are more modern than kings, and nations, and wars? For they should have made mention of all events, even those which happened before the flood; both of the creation of the world and the formation of man, and the whole succession of events. The Egyptian or Chaldaean prophets, and the other writers, should have been able accurately to tell, if at least they spoke by a divine and pure spirit, and spoke truth in all that was uttered by them; and they should have announced not only things past or present, but also those that were to come upon the world. And therefore it is proved that all others have been in error; and that we Christians alone have possessed the truth, inasmuch as we are taught by the Holy Spirit, who spoke in the holy prophets, and foretold all things.

Quel sage, quel poète, quel historien a pu dire la vérité sur ces premiers événements ? tous leurs dieux eux-mêmes n'ont-ils pas été engendrés longtemps après la fondation des villes ? ne sont-ils pas bien postérieurs aux rois, aux peuples et aux guerres de ces premiers temps ? Ces historiens ne devaient-ils pas aussi faire mention de tout ce qui s'est passé, même avant le déluge ? Si les prophètes d'Égypte et les autres auteurs chaldéens parlaient par l'Esprit saint et annonçaient la vérité, ne devaient-ils pas tout faire connaître, parler avec exactitude de l'origine du monde, de la création de l'homme et des autres événements qui suivirent ! Non-seulement ils devaient parler du passé et du présent, mais ils devaient même prévoir l'avenir et nous apprendre quel était le sort réservé au mondé. Il est évident qu'ils étaient tous dans l'erreur, que les Chrétiens seuls possèdent la vérité ; car ils sont instruits par l'Esprit saint, qui a parlé par les prophètes et leur a annoncé toutes choses.
