Theophilus to Autolycus

Chapter IX.--Christian Doctrine of God and His Law.

Now we also confess that God exists, but that He is one, the creator, and maker, and fashioner of this universe; and we know that all things are arranged by His providence, but by Him alone. And we have learned a holy law; but we have as lawgiver Him who is really God, who teaches us to act righteously, and to be pious, and to do good. And concerning piety ¹ He says, "Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I am the Lord thy God." ² And of doing good He said: "Honour thy father and thy mother; that it may be well with thee, and that thy days may be long in the land which I the Lord God give thee." Again, concerning righteousness: "Thou shalt not commit adultery. Thou shalt not kill. Thou shalt not steal. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, nor his land, nor his man-servant, nor his maid-servant, nor his ox, nor his beast of burden, nor any of his cattle, nor anything that is thy neighbour's. Thou shalt not wrest the judgment of the poor in his cause. ³ From every unjust matter keep thee far. The innocent and righteous thou shalt not slay; thou shalt not justify the wicked; and thou shalt not take a gift, for gifts blind the eyes of them that see and pervert righteous words." Of this divine law, then, Moses, who also was God's servant, was made the minister both to all the world, and chiefly to the Hebrews, who were also called Jews, whom an Egyptian king had in ancient days enslaved, and who were the righteous seed of godly and holy men--Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob. God, being mindful of them, and doing marvellous and strange miracles by the hand of Moses, delivered them, and led them out of Egypt, leading them through what is called the desert; whom He also settled again in the land of Canaan, which afterwards was called judaea, and gave them a law, and taught them these things. Of this great and wonderful law, which tends to all righteousness, the ten heads are such as we have already rehearsed.

IX.

Pour nous, nous reconnaissons un Dieu, mais un seul Dieu ; nous savons aussi que la Providence gouverne toutes choses, mais lui seul est cette Providence ; nous avons reçu une loi sainte, mais nous avons pour législateur le vrai Dieu, qui nous apprend à pratiquer la piété, la justice, et à faire le bien.

Voici ses préceptes sur la piété :

"Tu n'auras point d'autres dieux que moi. Tu ne te feras point d'idole taillée, ni aucune image de ce qui est au-dessus de toi dans les cieux, en bas sur la terre, ni dans les eaux sous la terre. Tu ne les adoreras point et ne les serviras pas : car je suis le Seigneur ton Dieu."

Sur les bonnes oeuvres, il s'exprime ainsi :

"Honore ton père et ta mère, afin que tes jours soient longs sur la terre que le Seigneur ton Dieu t'a donnée."

Voici enfin ce qu'il dit de la justice :

"Tu ne seras point adultère. Tu ne tueras point. Tu ne déroberas point. Tu ne porteras point de faux témoignage contre ton prochain. Tu ne désireras point la femme de ton prochain, ni sa maison, ni son serviteur, ni sa servante, ni son boeuf, ni son âne, ni aucune chose qui soit à lui. Tu ne seras point inique dans le jugement du pauvre. Tu t'éloigneras de toute parole injuste. Tu ne tueras point le juste et l'innocent. Tu ne justifieras point l'impie et tu ne recevras pas de présents ; car les présents aveuglent les yeux de ceux qui voient et pervertissent les justes."

Le ministre de cette sainte loi fut Moïse, serviteur de Dieu, qui la reçut pour le monde entier et principalement pour les Hébreux, connus aujourd'hui sous le nom de Juifs ; ce peuple fut autrefois réduit en servitude par le roi d'Égypte, quoiqu'il fut de la race des saints patriarches Abraham, Isaac et Jacob. Mais Dieu se souvint de lui ; il lui suscita Moïse, qui étonna l'Égypte de ses prodiges et délivra les Hébreux de leur dure captivité ; puis après les avoir fait errer dans le désert, il les rétablit dans la terre de Chanaan, appelée plus tard Judée ; ensuite il leur donna sa loi et ses préceptes. Tels sont les dix points principaux de cette loi admirable qui embrasse toute justice.
