Theophilus to Autolycus

Chapter XI.--Of Repentance.

And when the people transgressed the law which had been given to them by God, God being good and pitiful, unwilling to destroy them, in addition to His giving them the law, afterwards sent forth also prophets to them from among their brethren, to teach and remind them of the contents of the law, and to turn them to repentance, that they might sin no more. But if they persisted in their wicked deeds, He forewarned them that they should be delivered into subjection to all the kingdoms of the earth; and that this has already happened them is manifest. Concerning repentance, then, Isaiah the prophet, generally indeed to all, but expressly to the people, says: "Seek ye the Lord while He may be found, call ye upon Him while He is near: let the wicked forsake his ways, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the Lord his God, and he will find mercy, for He will abundantly pardon." ¹ And another prophet, Ezekiel, says: "If the wicked will turn from all his sins that he hath committed, and keep all My statutes, and do that which is right in My sight, he shall surely live, he shall not die. All his transgressions that he hath committed, they shall not be mentioned unto him; but in his righteousness that he hath done he shall live: for I desire not the death of the sinner, saith the Lord, but that he turn from his wicked way, and live." ² Again Isaiah: "Ye who take deep and wicked counsel, turn ye, that ye may be saved." ³ And another prophet, Jeremiah: "Turn to the Lord your God, as a grape-gatherer to his basket, and ye shall find mercy." ⁴ Many therefore, yea rather, countless are the sayings in the Holy Scriptures regarding repentance, God being always desirous that the race of men turn from all their sins.

XI.

Ce peuple ayant ensuite violé la loi qu'il avait reçue, Dieu, plein de miséricorde, ne voulut cependant pas le perdre, mais il lui suscita des prophètes parmi ses propres enfants, afin de l'instruire, de lui rappeler ses préceptes et de l'exhorter à la pénitence ; il leur prédit en même temps que s'ils persévéraient dans leur mauvaise voie, ils seraient captifs dans tous les royaumes de la terre ; événement qui s'est accompli, ainsi qu'il est facile de le voir.

Voici comme le prophète Isaïe les exhorte tous en général à la pénitence, et le peuple en particulier :

"Cherchez, dit-il, le Seigneur pendant que vous pouvez le trouver ; invoquez-le pendant qu'il est proche. Que l'impie abandonne sa voie ; et l'homme inique ses pensées ; qu'ils retournent au Seigneur, il aura pitié d'eux ; qu'ils reviennent, le Seigneur est riche en miséricordes, il vous remettra tous vos péchés."

Le prophète Ézéchiel dit aussi :

"Si l'impie fait pénitence de tous ses péchés, s'il garde tous mes préceptes, et sil accomplit le jugement et la justice, il vivra et ne mourra point. Je ne me souviendrai plus de toutes ses anciennes iniquités, et il vivra des oeuvres de justice qu'il aura faites, parce que je ne veux point la mort de l'impie, dit le Seigneur, mais qu'il se convertisse, qu'il se retire de sa mauvaise voie et qu'il vive."

Isaïe ajoute :

"Convertissez-vous au Seigneur, si vous voulez parvenir au salut, vous qui méditez d'iniques projets au fond de vos coeurs."

"Tournez-vous vers le Seigneur votre Dieu, dit Jérémie, comme le vendangeur vers la vigne, et vous obtiendrez miséricorde"

Nos livres saints parlent de la pénitence dans une infinité d'endroits, car le Seigneur a toujours voulu la conversion de l'homme.
