Chapter XII.--Of Righteousness.

Moreover, concerning the righteousness which the law enjoined, confirmatory utterances are found both with the prophets and in the Gospels, because they all spoke inspired by one Spirit of God. Isaiah accordingly spoke thus: "Put away the evil of your doings from your souls; learn to do well, seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow." ¹ And again the same prophet said: "Loose every band of wickedness, dissolve every oppressive contract, let the oppressed go free, and tear up every unrighteous bond. Deal out thy bread to the hungry, and bring the houseless poor to thy home. When thou seest the naked, cover him, and hide not thyself from thine own flesh. Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily, and thy righteousness shall go before thee." ² In like manner also Jeremiah says: "Stand in the ways, and see, and ask which is the good way of the Lord your God, and walk in it and ye shall find rest for your souls. Judge just judgment, for in this is the will of the Lord your God." ³ So also says Hosea: "Keep judgment, and draw near to your God, who established the heavens and created the earth." ⁴ And another, Joel, spoke in agreement with these: "Gather the people, sanctify the congregation, assemble the elders, gather the children that are in arms; let the bridegroom go forth of his chamber, and the bride out of her closet, and pray to the Lord thy God urgently that he may have mercy upon you, and blot out your sins." ⁵ In like manner also another, Zachariah:

"Thus saith the Lord Almighty, Execute true judgment, and show mercy and compassion every man to his brother; and oppress not the widow, nor the fatherless, nor the stranger; and let none of you imagine evil against his brother in your heart, saith the Lord Almighty." ⁶

XII.

Les prophètes et les évangélistes s'accordent parfaitement entre eux sur la justice ordonnée par la loi ; car ils ont tous été inspirés par le même esprit, l'esprit divin. Voici ce que dit Isaïe :

"Faites disparaître l'impiété de vos âmes, apprenez à faire le bien, cherchez la justice, délivrez l'opprimé, jugez l'orphelin et justifiez la veuve."

Puis dans un autre endroit :

"Rompez, dit-il, les liens de l'iniquité, portez les fardeaux de ceux qui sont accablés, donnez des consolations aux affligés, brisez les fers des captifs, partagez votre pain avec celui qui a faim, et recevez sous votre toit ceux qui n'ont point d'asile ; lorsque vous voyez un homme nu, couvrez-le, et ne méprisez point la chair dont vous êtes formés : alors votre lumière brillera comme l'aurore, et je vous rendrai la santé, et votre justice marchera devant vous."

Jérémie dit pareillement :

"Allez sur les chemins, considérez et interrogez les anciens sentiers pour connaître la bonne voie, et marchez-y ; et vous trouverez le rafraîchissement de vos âmes. Rendez la justice avec équité, car c'est là la volonté du Seigneur votre Dieu."

Moïse dit aussi :

"Gardez la justice, et approchez-vous du Seigneur votre Dieu, qui a affermi, le ciel et posé les fondements de la terre."

Écoutez encore le prophète Joël :

"Réunissez le peuple, dit-il, purifiez-le ; assemblez les vieillards, les enfants, ceux même qui sont à la mamelle ; que l'époux sorte de sa couche, et l'épouse de son lit nuptial. Priez avec ferveur le Seigneur votre Dieu, afin qu'il ait pitié de vous et qu'il efface vos péchés."

Le prophète Zacharie s'écrie de son côté :

"Voici ce que dit le Seigneur, le Dieu des armées : Jugez selon la justice, usez de clémence et de miséricorde les uns envers les autres. Ne calomniez ni la veuve, ni l'orphelin, ni l'étranger, ni le pauvre ; que l'homme ne médite pas dans son coeur le mal contre son frère."
