Theophilus to Autolycus
Chapter XIV.--Of Loving Our Enemies.
And that we should be kindly disposed, not only towards those of our own stock, as some suppose, Isaiah the prophet said: "Say to those that hate you, and that cast you out, Ye are our brethren, that the name of the Lord may be glorified, and be apparent in their joy." 1 And the Gospel says: "Love your enemies, and pray for them that despitefully use you. For if ye love them who love you, what reward have ye? This do also the robbers and the publicans." 2 And those that do good it teaches not to boast, lest they become men-pleasers. For it says: "Let not your left hand know what your right hand doeth." 3 Moreover, concerning subjection to authorities and powers, and prayer for them, the divine word gives us instructions, in order that "we may lead a quiet and peaceable life." 4 And it teaches us to render all things to all, 5 "honour to whom honour, fear to whom fear, tribute to whom tribute; to owe no man anything, but to love all."

XIV.
Non-seulement les saints livres nous apprennent à aimer nos parents et nos amis, mais aussi nos ennemis, selon ces paroles d'Isaïe :
"Dites à ceux qui vous haïssent et vous détestent : Vous êtes nos frères ; afin que le nom du Seigneur soit glorifié, et que la joie soit dans leur coeur."
L'Évangile dit encore :
"Aimez vos ennemis, faites du bien à ceux qui vous haïssent, et priez pour ceux qui vous calomnient ; car si vous aimez ceux qui vous aiment, quelle récompense aurez-vous ? Les publicains ne le font-ils pas aussi ?"
Ceux même qui font le bien ne doivent point s'en glorifier, ni chercher à plaire aux hommes :
"Que votre main gauche, dit le Sauveur, ne sache pas ce que fait votre main droite."
La sainte Écriture nous ordonne aussi d'être soumis aux magistrats et aux princes, et de prier pour eux, afin que nous menions une vie paisible et tranquille."
Enfin elle nous apprend à rendre à chacun ce qui lui appartient :
"Rendez, dit saint Paul, l'honneur à qui vous devez l'honneur, la crainte à qui vous devez la crainte. Ne demeurez redevable de rien à personne, si ce n'est de l'amour qu'on se doit les uns aux autres."
