On this account also, Daniel, ¹ foreseeing His advent, said that a stone, cut out without hands, came into this world. For this is what "without hands" means, that His coming into this world was not by the operation of human hands, that is, of those men who are accustomed to stone-cutting; that is, Joseph taking no part with regard to it, but Mary alone co-operating with the pre-arranged plan. For this stone from the earth derives existence from both the power and the wisdom of God. Wherefore also Isaiah says: "Thus saith the Lord, Behold, I deposit in the foundations of Zion a stone, precious, elect, the chief, the corner-one, to be had in honour." ² So, then, we understand that His advent in human nature was not by the will of a man, but by the will of God.

Ebenso bezeichnete Daniel, indem er die Ankunft des Herrn voraussah und verkündete, daß er „als ein ohne Hände losgerissener Stein in diese Welt kommen werde“¹ , durch die Worte: „Ohne Hände“, daß nicht durch das Zutun menschlicher Hände, d.h. jener Männer, von welchen die Steine gewöhnlich gebrochen werden, seine Ankunft in dieser Welt erfolgen werde, d.h. nicht durch das Zutun des Joseph, sondern allein, indem Maria mit dem Heilsplan mitwirkte. Dieser „Stein“ nämlich ist von der Erde und besteht durch die Kraft und Kunst Gottes. Deswegen spricht auch Isaias: „So spricht der Herr: „Siehe, ich lege in die Fundamente Sions einen kostbaren, auserwählten, einen Haupt-, Eck- und Ehrenstein“² , damit wir verstehen sollen, daß seine Ankunft in menschlicher Gestalt nicht aus dem Willen eines Mannes, sondern aus dem Willen Gottes erfolgt sei.
