Plato is proved to be more religious than these men, for he allowed that the same God was both just and good, having power over all things, and Himself executing judgment, expressing himself thus, "And God indeed, as He is also the ancient Word, possessing the beginning, the end, and the mean of all existing things, does everything rightly, moving round about them according to their nature; but retributive justice always follows Him against those who depart from the divine law." ¹ Then, again, he points out that the Maker and Framer of the universe is good. "And to the good," he says, "no envy ever springs up with regard to anything;" ² thus establishing the goodness of God, as the beginning and the cause of the creation of the world, but not ignorance, nor an erring Aeon, nor the consequence of a defect, nor the Mother weeping and lamenting, nor another God or Father.

Da erweist sich doch Plato frömmer als diese, indem er ein und denselben Gott als gerecht und gut bekennt und ihm die Macht über alles und das Gericht zuspricht mit den Worten: „Gott, wie auch das alte Wort sagt, umfaßt den Anfang und das Ende und die Mitte aller Dinge, die da sind, bringt sie glücklich zustande und umgibt sie gemäß seiner Natur; ihm folgt aber beständig die Gerechtigkeit als Rächerin gegen die, welche vom göttlichen Gesetz abweichen“¹ . Und an S. 320einer anderen Stelle zeigt er ihn als den guten Schöpfer und Urheber des Universums, indem er sagt: „In dem Guten aber entsteht niemals irgend welcher Neid über jemanden“² , wodurch er als Anfang und Grund für die Schöpfung des Weltalls die Güte Gottes hinstellt, aber nicht die Unwissenheit oder einen irrenden Äonen oder die Frucht des Fehltrittes oder eine weinende und wehklagende Mutter oder einen andern Gott und Vater.
