Against Heresies

1.

The oblation of the Church, therefore, which the Lord gave instructions to be offered throughout all the world, is accounted with God a pure sacrifice, and is acceptable to Him; not that He stands in need of a sacrifice from us, but that he who offers is himself glorified in what he does offer, if his gift be accepted. For by the gift both honour and affection are shown forth towards the King; and the Lord, wishing us to offer it in all simplicity and innocence, did express Himself thus: "Therefore, when thou offerest thy gift upon the altar, and shalt remember that thy brother hath ought against thee, leave thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then return and offer thy gift." ¹ We are bound, therefore, to offer to God the first-fruits of His creation, as Moses also says, "Thou shalt not appear in the presence of the Lord thy God empty;" ² so that man, being accounted as grateful, by those things in which he has shown his gratitude, may receive that honour which flows from Him. ³

Gegen die Häresien (BKV)

Daher ist die Opfergabe der Kirche, die nach dem Auftrag des Herrn in der gesamten Welt dargebracht wird, als ein reines Opfer bei Gott angesehen und ihm angenehm, nicht als ob er ein Opfer von uns gebrauchte, sondern weil der, welcher es darbringt, selbst verherrlicht wird durch das, was er darbringt, wenn seine Gabe angenommen wird. Indem wir dem Könige etwas schenken, zeigen wir ihm unsere Verehrung und Zuneigung. Der Herr will aber, daß wir in aller Einfalt und Unschuld opfern; deshalb sagt er mit nachdrücklichen Worten: „Wenn du also deine Gabe darbringst vor dem Altare und dich erinnerst, daß dein Bruder etwas gegen dich hat, dann laß deine Gabe vor dem Altar und geh dich zuerst versöhnen mit deinem Bruder and dann komme zurück und opfere deine Gabe!“¹ Also soll man dem Herrn die Erstlinge der S. 377Schöpfung opfern, wie auch Moses sagt: „Du sollst nicht leer erscheinen vor dem Angesichte des Herrn, deines Gottes“² . Insofern der Mensch sich dankbar erweist, wird ihm das zum Danke angerechnet, damit er von ihm Ehre empfange.
