6.

Now we make offering to Him, not as though He stood in need of it, but rendering thanks for His gift, ¹ and thus sanctifying what has been created. For even as God does not need our possessions, so do we need to offer something to God; as Solomon says: "He that hath pity upon the poor, lendeth unto the Lord." ² For God, who stands in need of nothing, takes our good works to Himself for this purpose, that He may grant us a recompense of His own good things, as our Lord says: "Come, ye blessed of My Father, receive the kingdom prepared for you. For I was an hungered, and ye gave Me to eat: I was thirsty, and ye gave Me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took Me in: naked, and ye clothed Me; sick, and ye visited Me; in prison, and ye came to Me." ³ As, therefore, He does not stand in need of these [services], yet does desire that we should render them for our own benefit, lest we be unfruitful; so did the Word give to the people that very precept as to the making of oblations, although He stood in no need of them, that they might learn to serve God: thus is it, therefore, also His will that we, too, should offer a gift at the altar, frequently and without intermission. The altar, then, is in heaven ⁴ (for towards that place are our prayers and oblations directed); the temple likewise [is there], as John says in the Apocalypse, "And the temple of God was opened:" ⁵ the tabernacle also: "For, behold," He says, "the tabernacle of God, in which He will dwell with men."

Nicht wegen seines Bedürfnisses opfern wir ihm also, sondern um seiner Herrschaft Dank zu sagen und seine Gabe zu heiligen. Denn wie Gott kein Bedürfnis hat für unsere Gaben, so haben wir das Bedürfnis, Gott etwas zu opfern. So sagt Salomon: „Wer sich der Armen erbarmt, leiht Gott auf Zinsen“¹ . Obwohl Gott nämlich nichts gebraucht, nimmt er für sich unsere guten Werke an, um uns zum Entgelt von seinen Gütern mitzuteilen, wie unser Herr sagt: „Kommet, ihr Gesegneten meines Vaters, empfanget das euch zubereitete Reich! Denn ich war hungrig, und ihr gabt mir zu essen; ich war durstig, und ihr habt mich getränkt; ich war ein Fremdling, und ihr habt mich aufgenommen; ich war nackt, und ihr habt mich bedeckt; ich war krank, und ihr habt mich besucht; ich war im Gefängnisse, und ihr seid zu mir gekommen“² . Obwohl er also dessen nicht bedarf, will er dennoch, daß wir es unseretwegen tun, damit wir nicht unfruchtbar bleiben. So gab ebendasselbe Wort dem Volke das Gebot für die Darbringung der Opfer, nicht weil er dessen bedurfte, sondern damit sie lernen sollten, Gott zu dienen. Deshalb verlangt er auch S. 381von uns, daß wir ihm immerdar ohne Unterlaß am Altare das Opfer darbringen. Der eigentliche Altar aber ist im Himmel, wohin auch unsere Gebete und Opfer zielen, und der Tempel, von dem Johannes sagt: „Und geöffnet wurde der Tempel Gottes und der Tabernakel³ , Siehe, sagt er, hier ist der Tabernakel Gottes, in welchem er wohnen wird mit den Menschen“⁴ .
