2.

But what is that which, like a grain of wheat, is sown in the earth and decays, unless it be the bodies which are laid in the earth, into which seeds are also cast? And for this reason he said, "It is sown in dishonour, it rises in glory." ¹ For what is more ignoble than dead flesh? Or, on the other hand, what is more glorious than the same when it arises and partakes of incorruption? "It is sown in weakness, it is raised in power:" ² in its own weakness certainly, because since it is earth it goes to earth; but [it is quickened] by the power of God, who raises it from the dead. "It is sown an animal body, it rises a spiritual body." ³ He has taught, beyond all doubt, that such language was not used by him, either with reference to the soul or to the spirit, but to bodies that have become corpses. For these are animal bodies, that is, [bodies] which partake of life, which when they have lost, they succumb to death; then, rising through the Spirit's instrumentality, they become spiritual bodies, so that by the Spirit they possess a perpetual life. "For now," he says, "we know in part, and we prophesy in part, but then face to face." ⁴ And this it is which has been said also by Peter: "Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom now also, not seeing, ye believe; and believing, ye shall rejoice with joy unspeakable." ⁵ For our face shall see the face of the Lord ⁶ and shall rejoice with joy unspeakable,--that is to say, when it shall behold its own Delight.

Was aber wie ein Weizenkorn gesät wird und in der Erde verwest, das ist nichts anders als die Körper, die in die Erde gelegt werden, wie man Samen ausstreut. Deswegen sagt er auch: „Gesät wird es in Armseligkeit, auferstehen wird es in Herrlichkeit“¹ . Denn was ist armseliger als totes Fleisch? Was wiederum herrlicher, als wenn es aufersteht und die Unverweslichkeit empfängt? Gesät wird es in Schwachheit, auferstehen wird es in Kraft: In seiner Schwachheit, da es aus der Erde stammt, geht es in die Erde; durch die Kraft Gottes aber wird es von den Toten auferweckt. Gesät wird ein animaler Leib, auferstehen wird ein S. 490geistiger Leib² . Unzweifelhaft hat er dies nicht von der Seele, noch von dem Geiste, sondern von den sterblichen Körpern gesagt. Denn derart sind die animalen Körper, die an der Seele, der Anima, teilnehmen, daß sie durch den Verlust derselben sterben; wenn sie dann aber durch den Geist auferstehen, werden sie geistige Körper, sodaß sie durch den Geist immerwährendes Leben haben. „Jetzt nämlich“, heißt es, „erkennen wir stückweise und prophezeien stückweise, dann aber von Angesicht zu Angesicht“³ . Dasselbe sagt auch Petrus: „Ihr liebt ihn, obwohl ihr ihn nicht seht; ihr glaubt an ihn, obwohl ihr ihn jetzt nicht schaut; aber glaubend werdet ihr frohlocken in unaussprechlicher Freude“⁴ . Denn unser Angesicht wird schauen das Angesicht Gottes, des lebendigen, und wird sich freuen in unaussprechlicher Freude, wenn es nämlich seine Freude sieht.
