Against Heresies

Thus then does the Lord plainly show that it was the true Lord and the one God who had been set forth by the law; for Him whom the law proclaimed as God, the same did Christ point out as the Father, whom also it behoves the disciples of Christ alone to serve. By means of the statements of the law, He put our adversary to utter confusion; and the law directs us to praise God the Creator (Demiurgum), and to serve Him alone. Since this is the case, we must not seek for another Father besides Him, or above Him, since there is one God who justifies the circumcision by faith, and the uncircumcision through faith. ¹ For if there were any other perfect Father above Him, He (Christ) would by no means have overthrown Satan by means of His words and commandments. For one ignorance cannot be done away with by means of another ignorance, any more than one defect by another defect. If, therefore, the law is due to ignorance and defect, how could the statements contained therein bring to nought the ignorance of the devil, and conquer the strong man? For a strong man can be conquered neither by an inferior nor by an equal, but by one possessed of greater power. But the Word of God is the superior above all, He who is loudly proclaimed in the law: "Hear, O Israel, the Lord thy God is one God;" and, "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart;" and, "Him shall thou adore, and Him alone shall thou serve." ² Then in the Gospel, casting down the apostasy by means of these expressions, He did both overcome the strong man by His Father's voice, and He acknowledges the commandment of the law to express His own sentiments, when He says, "Thou shall not tempt the Lord thy God." ³ For He did not confound the adversary by the saying of any other, but by that belonging to His own Father, and thus overcame the strong man.

Deutlich zeigt also der Herr, daß der Herr der wahre und einzige Gott ist, der vom Gesetze verkündigt war. Den das Gesetz verkündigt hatte, den zeigte Christus als den Vater, dem seine Jünger allein dienen dürfen. Auch die Aussprüche des Gesetzes widerlegen unsere Gegner, denn das Gesetz befiehlt uns, den Weltenschöpfer als Gott zu loben und ihm allein zu dienen. S. 532Also darf man keinen andern Vater außer diesem, noch über diesem suchen; denn „einer ist Gott, der die Beschneidung aus dem Glauben und die Vorhaut durch den Glauben rechtfertigt“¹ . Wäre nämlich über diesem ein anderer vollkommener Vater, dann hätte er nicht durch dessen Worte und Gebote den Satan niedergeworfen. Kann doch eine Unwissenheit nicht durch eine andere aufgehoben werden, ebensowenig wie ein Fehltritt durch den andern wieder gutgemacht werden kann. Wäre also das Gesetz aus der Unwissenheit und dem Fehltritt hervorgegangen, wie hätten seine Aussprüche die Unwissenheit des Teufels aufheben und den Starken besiegen können? Denn nicht von einem Schwächeren oder einem Gleichstarken kann der Starke besiegt werden, sondern nur von dem Stärkeren. Mehr aber als alles vermag das Wort Gottes, das sich im Gesetze vernehmen läßt: „Höre, Israel, der Herr, dein Gott, ist der einzige Gott“² . Und: „Du sollst den Herrn, deinen Gott, aus deiner ganzen Seele lieben“³ . Und: „Diesen sollst du anbeten und ihm allein dienen“⁴ . Durch ebendieselben Aussprüche streckt er im Evangelium den Abfall nieder, besiegt mit des Vaters Stimme den Starken und tut kund, daß seine Aussprüche das Gebot des Gesetzes sind, indem er spricht: „Du sollst den Herrn deinen Gott nicht versuchen“⁵ . Nicht durch einen fremden, sondern durch den eigenen Ausspruch seines Vaters streckte er den Gegner nieder und besiegte den Starken.
