24.

1. Kannst du auch Herr über deinen Besitz sein? Sag es, und Christus beraubt dich deines Besitzes nicht, der Herr mißgönnt ihn dir nicht. Aber du siehst, daß du von deinem Geld besiegt und überwältigt wirst? Laß es fahren, wirf es fort, hasse es, kehre dich von ihm ab, fliehe! 2. „Und wenn dich dein rechtes Auge ärgert, reiße es schnell heraus!“ Es ist besser, einäugig das Reich Gottes als unversehrt das Feuer zu erlangen. Und wenn eine Hand oder ein Fuß (dich ärgert) oder dein Leben, S. 255 hasse es!¹ Denn wenn es hier Christus zuliebe verloren geht, wird es dort gerettet werden.²

XXIV.

You may even go against wealth. Say, "Certainly Christ does not debar me from property. The Lord does not envy." But do you see yourself overcome and overthrown by it? Leave it, throw it away, hate, renounce, flee. "Even if thy right eye offend thee," quickly "cut it out." ¹ Better is the kingdom of God to a man with one eye, than the fire to one who is unmutilated. Whether hand, or foot, or soul, hate it. For if it is destroyed here for Christ's sake, it will be restored to life yonder.
