Origen Against Celsus

Chapter LI.

But seeing that we have answered to the best of our ability the charges brought by Celsus against the Jews and their doctrine, let us proceed to consider what follows, and to prove that it is no empty boast on our part when we make a profession of knowing the great God, and that we have not been led away by any juggling tricks ¹ of Moses (as Celsus imagines), or even of our own Saviour Jesus; but that for a good end we listen to the God who speaks in Moses, and have accepted Jesus, whom he testifies to be God, as the Son of God, in hope of receiving the best rewards if we regulate our lives according to His word. And we shall willingly pass over what we have already stated by way of anticipation on the points, "whence we came and who is our leader, and what law proceeded from Him." And if Celsus would maintain that there is no difference between us and the Egyptians, who worship the goat, or the ram, or the crocodile, or the ox, or the river-horse, or the dog-faced baboon, ² or the cat, he can ascertain if it be so, and so may any other who thinks alike on the subject. We, however, have to the best of our ability defended ourselves at great length in the preceding pages on the subject of the honour which we render to our Jesus, pointing out that we have found the better part; ³ and that in showing that the truth which is contained in the teaching of Jesus Christ is pure and unmixed with error, we are not commending ourselves, but our Teacher, to whom testimony was borne through many witnesses by the Supreme God and the prophetic writings among the Jews, and by the very clearness of the case itself, for it is demonstrated that He could not have accomplished such mighty works without the divine help.

51.

Nachdem wir, so gut wir konnten, auf die Anklagen, die Celsus wider die Juden und ihre Lehre erhoben hat, geantwortet haben, wollen wir nun vorlegen. was weiter folgt, und dartun, dass es unsererseits nicht „leere Prahlerei“ ist, wenn wir verkündigen „ wir besäßen Kenntnis von dem großen Gott“ , und zeigen, dass wir auch nicht, wie Celsus meint, „ von der Zauberei des Moses oder auch unseres Heilandes Jesus selbst “verführt worden sind„, sondern dass wir “zu einem guten Ende„ auch auf “den Gott hören, der durch Moses geredet hat„, und den von ihm als “Gott" bezeugten Jesus¹ als Sohn Gottes anerkennen, in der Hoffnung, den herrlichsten Lohn zu empfangen, wenn wir nach seiner Lehre leben.

S. 507 Mit Absicht wollen wir übergehen, was wir in unserer Widerlegung schon vorweggenommen haben, als wir darlegten, „woher wir kommen“, und wen wir als Stifter haben„, und welcher Art “das Gesetz„ ist, das er gegeben hat. Und wenn Celsus behauptet, “es sei kein Unterschied zwischen uns und den Ägyptiern, die den Ziegenbock oder den Widder oder das Krokodil oder den Stier oder das Flußpferd oder den hundsköpfigen² oder die Katze verehren," so mag er selbst das wissen und wenn sonst noch jemand seine Meinung hierüber teilt. Wir aber haben uns in dem Vorausgehenden weitläufig und nach besten Kräften wegen der Ehre gerechtfertigt, die wir unserem Jesus erweisen, und haben gezeigt, dass wir nichts Besseres finden konnten. Und wenn wir allein die reine und von allem Irrtum freie Wahrheit als in der Lehre Jesu Christi vorhanden erweisen, so erheben wir nicht uns selbst, sondern unseren Lehrmeister, der von dem über allen waltenden Gott und von den Propheten, die unter den Juden geweissagt haben, und von dem Augenschein der Sache selbst vielfach bezeugt worden ist; denn es zeigt sich deutlich, dass er ohne Gottes Hilfe nicht imstande gewesen wäre, so große Dinge zu vollbringen-
