6. Welche Gaben darf man annehmen und welche nicht?

Der Bischof muß wohl wissen, welche Gaben er annehmen darf und welche nicht. Denn zur Darbringung darf S. 234 er nicht zulassen die Händler; „denn nicht gerechtfertigt wird der Händler wegen der Sünde;„¹ denn von ihnen sagt Isaias, Israel tadelnd: „Deine Händler mischen den Wein mit Wasser.“² Aber abzuhalten hat er auch die Hurer; „denn nicht sollst du dem Herrn den Lohn der Hurerei darbringen;„³ ebenso Räuber, nach fremdem Gut Lüsterne und Ehebrecher. Die Opfergaben dieser Menschen sind ein Gräuel vor Gott. Aber auch Diejenigen, welche Wittwen bedrücken und Waisen quälen und die Gefängnisse mit Unschuldigen anfüllen, oder auch die ihr Dienstgesinde schlecht behandeln mit Schlägen, Hunger und schwerer Arbeit, ferner die ganze Städte verwüsten. Diese sollst du, o Bischof, von dir abweisen; denn ihre Gaben sind unrein. Weise ferner ab die Urkundenfälscher und Solche, welche der Ungerechtigkeit das Wort reden, und die Götzenbilder verfertigen, Diebe und ungerechte Zöllner, Leute, die falsches Gewicht und Maß führen, deßgleichen Soldaten, welche falsche Angaben machen und mit ihrem Solde nicht zufrieden sind und die Armen unterdrücken; ferner Mörder, Scharfrichter, ungerechte Richter, Unruhestifter, hinterlistige Menschen, Unzüchtige, Weinsäufer und Gotteslästerer, Hurer, Wucherer, kurz alle Lasterhaften, welche Gottes Gebote übertreten. Von ihnen allen sagt die Schrift, daß sie vor Gott ein Gräuel sind: wer nun von diesen Lasterhaften Gaben annimmt und Wittwen und Waisen damit ernährt, macht sich des Gerichts vor Gott schuldig, ähnlich dem Propheten Adonias. Dieser hatte nämlich gegen das Gebot des Herrn Brod gegessen und Wasser getrunken an dem Orte, wovon ihm der Herr wegen der Abgötterei Jeroboams geboten, daß er nicht Brod esse und nicht Wasser trinke; zur Strafe für diesen Ungehorsam traf ihn ein Löwe auf dem Wege und tödtete ihn.⁴ Eine Gabe, welche vom rechtmäßig erworbenen Gute Wittwen und Waisen zur Nahrung gereicht wird, ist, S. 135 wenn auch noch so unbedeutend, viel würdiger als eine durch Ungerechtigkeit erworbene, wenn sie noch so großartig wäre. Denn die Schrift sagt: „Besser ist dem Gerechten das Wenige, als die großen Schätze der Sünder.“⁵ Auch wird eine Wittwe, die von Gottlosen Speise und Sättigung erhielt und für dieselben betet, nicht erhört werden. Denn der herzenskundige Gott hat bezüglich der Gottlosen den Richterspruch gethan: „Wenn auch Moses und Samuel vor mir ständen, so hätte ich doch kein Herz für dieses Volk;„⁶ Bete nicht für dieses Volk und erflehe nicht Erbarmen für sie und nahe dich ihretwegen mir nicht, denn ich will dich nicht erhören.“⁷

VI. Whose Oblations are to Be Received, and Whose Not to Be Received.

Now the bishop ought to know whose oblations he ought to receive, and whose he ought not. For he is to avoid corrupt dealers, and not receive their gifts. "For, a corrupt dealer shall not be justified from sin."¹ For of them it was that Isaiah reproached Israel, and said, "Thy corrupt dealers mingle wine with water."² He is also to avoid fornicators, for "thou shall not offer the hire of an harlot to the Lord."³ He is also to avoid extortioners, and such as covet other men's goods, and adulterers; for the sacrifices of such as these are abominable with God. Also those that oppress the widow and overbear the orphan, and fill prisons with the innocent, and abuse their own servants wickedly, I mean with stripes, and hunger, and hard service, nay, destroy whole cities; do thou, O bishop, avoid such as these, and their odious oblations. Thou shalt also refuse rogues, and such pleaders that plead on the side of injustice, and idol-makers, and thieves, and unjust publicans, and those that deceive by false balances and deceitful measures, and a soldier who is a false accuser and not content with his wages, but does violence to the needy, a murderer, a cut-throat, and an unjust judge, a subverter of causes, him that lies in wait for men, a worker of abominable wickedness, a drunkard, a blasphemer, a sodomite, an usurer, and every one that is wicked and opposes the will of God. For the Scripture says that all such as these are abominable with God. For those that receive from such persons, and thereby support the widows and orphans, shall be obnoxious to the judgment-seat of God; as Adonias the prophet, in the book of Kings, when he disobeyed God, and both "eat bread and drank water in the place which the Lord had forbid him,"⁴ because of the impiety of Jeroboam, was slain by a lion. For the bread which is distributed to the widows from labour is better, though it be short and little, than that from injustice and false accusation, though it be much and fine. For the Scripture says: "Better is a little to the righteous, than much riches of the sinners."⁵ Now, although a widow, who eats and is filled from the impious, pray for them, she shall not be heard. For God, who knows the heart, with judgment has declared concerning the impious, saying, "If Moses and Samuel stand before my face in their behalf, I will not hear them;"⁶ and, "Pray thou not for this people, and do not ask mercy for them, and do not intercede with me for them, for I will not hear thee."⁷
