12. Über die sündhafte Anbetung der Gestirne.

Die hl. Schrift verbietet nicht nur das Anbeten der Götzenbilder, sondern auch der Himmelslichter, schärft im Gesetze ein, weder bei ihnen zu schwören noch (religiösen) Dienst ihnen zu weihen. Denn es steht geschrieben: „Daß du nicht etwa deine Augen zum Himmel erhebest und die Sonne schauest und den Mond und alle Sterne des Himmels und dich irrest und betrügest und sie anbetest und sie verehrest.„¹ Und an einer andern Stelle: „Füget euch nicht nach der Weise der Heiden und fürchtet euch vor den Zeichen des Himmels nicht, wovor die Heiden sich fürchten.“² Die Gestirne und Himmelslichter sind den Menschen zum Leuchten gegeben, aber nicht, um von ihnen angebetet zu werden, wenn auch die Israelitin in sittlicher Bosheit statt des Schöpfers die Schöpfung angebetet, den Schöpfer beleidiget, die Schöpfung mehr, als sich ziemt, bewundert, sich einst in der Wüste ein Kalb³ gemacht, den Beelphegor⁴ angebetet und ein andermal den Baal⁵ und den Thammuz⁶ und die Sidonische Astarte⁷ und wiederum den Moloch und Chamos⁸ und ein andermal den Helios (die Sonne) wie bei Ezechiel⁹ geschrieben ist; ja selbst unvernünftige Thiere beteten sie an, wie bei den Ägyptiern den Apis und den Bock Mendesius und silberne und goldene Götter, wie in Judäa. Wegen all deß drohte ihnen Gott durch den Propheten: „Ist's dem Hause Juda zu gering, diese Gräuel zu thun, die sie hier thun, daß sie das Land auch noch mit Ungerechtigkeit erfüllen und wiederholt mich zum Zorne reizen? Und siehe, sie spotten meiner. Darum will auch ich im Grimme handeln, mein Auge soll nicht schauen, und ich will mich nicht erbarmen, und wenn sie mit S. 160 lauter Stimme zu meinen Ohren rufen, werde ich sie nichterhören.„¹⁰

Ihr sehet also, Geliebte, welche Aussprüche der Herr gegen Jene gethan, welche Götzendienst treiben und Sonne und Mond anbeten. Deßwegen darf ein Christ weder bei der Sonne schwören, noch bei Mond oder Gestirnen, auch nicht bei Himmel oder Erde oder irgend einem Bilde des Thierkreises, sei es klein oder groß. Unser göttlicher Lehrmeister hat uns beim wahren Gott befohlen,¹¹ nicht zu schwören damit unser Wort glaubwürdiger sei als der Eid, weder beim Himmel, wie die Heiden gottloser Weise thun, noch bei Jerusalem oder dem Heiligthum Gottes oder dem Altar oder der Opfergabe oder der Vergoldung des Tempels oder beim eigenen Haupte, denn das ist Gewohnheit jüdischer Fälschung und deßwegen auch verboten. Der Herr hat den Gläubigen befohlen: „Eure Rede sei Ja! Ja! Nein! Nein! Was darüber ist, ist vom Bösen.“ Um wie viel größer ist die Verschuldung Derer, welche bei erdichteten (Göttern) wie zum Eide schwören und das bloß Eingebildete für wahr verherrlichen (durch Anrufung beim Eide nämlich!) Solche hat Gott (nach den Worten des heiligen Paulus)¹² um der Schlechtigkeit willen der Rathlosigkeit überlassen, zu thun, was sich nicht geziemt.

Constitutions of the Holy Apostles

XII. That We Ought Not to Sing an Heathen or an Obscene Song, Nor to Swear by an Idol; Because It is an Impious Thing, and Contrary to the Knowledge of God.

Nor do the legislators give us only prohibitions concerning idols, but also warn us concerning the luminaries, not to swear by them, nor to serve them. For they say: "Lest, when thou seest the sun, and the moon, and the stars, thou shouldest be seduced to worship them."¹ And elsewhere: "Do not ye learn to walk after the ways of the heathen, and be not afraid of the signs of heaven."² For the stars and the luminaries were given to men to shine upon them, but not for worship; although the Israelites, by the perverseness of their temper, "worshipped the creature instead of the Creator,"³ and acted insultingly to their Maker, and admired the creature more than is fit. And sometimes they made a calf, as in the wilderness;⁴ sometimes they worshipped Baalpeor;⁵ another time Baal,⁶ and Thamuz,⁷ and Astarte of Sidon;⁸ and again Moloch and Chamos;⁹ another time the sun,¹⁰ as it is written in Ezekiel; nay, and besides, brute creatures, as among the Egyptians Apis, and the Mendesian goat, and gods of silver and gold, as in Judea. On account of all which things He threatened them, and said by the prophet: "Is it a small thing to the house of Judah to do these abominations which they have done? For they have filled the land with their wickedness, to provoke me to anger: and, behold, they are as those that mock. And I will act with anger. Mine eye shall not spare, neither will I have mercy; and they shall cry in mine ears with a great voice, and I will not hearken unto them."¹¹ Consider, beloved, how many things the Lord declares against idolaters, and the worshippers of the sun and moon. Wherefore it is the duty of a man of God, as he is a Christian, not to swear by the sun, or by the moon, or by the stars; nor by the heaven, nor by the earth, by any of the elements, whether small or great. For if our Master charged us not to swear by the true God, that our word might be firmer than an oath, nor by heaven itself, for that is a piece of heathen wickedness, nor by Jerusalem, nor by the sanctuary of God, nor the altar, nor the gift, nor the gilding of the altar, nor one's own head,¹² for this custom is a piece of Judaic corruption, and on that account was forbidden; and if He exhorts the faithful that their yea be yea, and their nay, nay, and says that "what is more than these is of the evil one," how much more blameable are those who appeal to deities falsely so called as the objects of an oath, and who glorify imaginary beings instead of those that are real, whom God for their perverseness "delivered over to foolishness, to do those things that are not convenient!"¹³
