1. Der Bischöfe sollen sich besonders vor aller Häresie bewahren, damit es ihnen nicht gehe wie Dathan, Abiron und anderen.

S. 177 Vor Allem hütet euch, Bischöfe, vor den schrecklichen und gefährlichen und gottlosen Ketzereien, fliehet sie wie Feuer, welches die, so sich ihm nahen, verbrennt. Vermeidet aber auch die Spaltungen; denn es ist weder erlaubt, zu gottlosen Ketzereien geistig hinzuneigen, noch ist’s erlaubt, sich vom Ehrgeize zu einer Trennung von den Gleichgesinnten verleiten zu lassen. Denn Einige, welche solche Versuche einst gewagt, sind der Rache nicht entgangen. Dathan nämlich und Abiron, welche gegen Moses sich empört hatten, wurden von der Erde verschlungen,¹ Core aber und Zweihundertundfünfzig mit ihm, S. 178 weil sie gegen Aaron aufgestanden, wurden eine Speise des Feuers. Maria aber, welche den Moses beschimpft, wurde sieben Tage aus dem Lager verbannt; sie hatte nämlich gesagt, Moses habe eine Äthiopierin zur Frau genommen.² Aber nicht nur in diesen Fällen, sondern auch bei Azarias und Ozias (erfolgte Strafe); Letzterer war König von Juda, und da er das Priesterthum vergewaltigte und das Räucherwerk unbefugter Weise darbringen wollte und, hieran gehindert von Azarias und den achtzig Priestern, Dieß nicht beichtete,³ wurde er mit dem Aussatz an der Stirne geschlagen, und er ging eilends hinaus, weil der Herr ihn gestraft hatte.

I. Who They Were that Ventured to Make Schisms, and Did Not Escape Punishment.

Above all things, O bishop, avoid the sad and dangerous and most atheistical heresies, eschewing them as fire that burns those that come near to it. Avoid also schisms: for it is neither lawful to turn one's mind towards wicked heresies, nor to separate from those of the same sentiment out of ambition. For some who ventured to set up such practices of old did not escape punishment. For Dathan and Abiram,¹ who set up in opposition to Moses, were swallowed up into the earth. But Corah, and those two hundred and fifty who with him raised a sedition against Aaron, were consumed by fire. Miriam also, who reproached Moses, was cast out of the camp for seven days; for she said that Moses had taken an Ethiopian to wife.² Nay, in the case of Azariah and Uzziah,³ the latter of which was king of Judah, but venturing to usurp the priesthood, and desiring to offer incense, which it was not lawful for him to do, was hindered by Azariah the high priest, and the fourscore priests; and when he would not obey he found the leprosy to arise in his forehead, and he hastened to go out, because the Lord had reproved him.
