3. Schon im alten Bunde strafte Gott so schrecklich den Trotz und die Auflehnung gegen Moses.

Und sie empörten sich gegen Moses, den Diener Gottes, den allersanftesten und menschenfreundlichsten Mann,¹ und die Undankbaren entehrten einen so großen Mann: den Gesetzgeber, den Wächter, den Hohenpriester und König, den Eingeweihten in die göttlichen Geheimnisse, der als Künstler (im Bau der Stiftshütte) die Werke des Schöpfers darstellte; den mildesten, bescheidensten, den geduldigsten und menschenfreundlichsten, Denjenigen, der sie kraft seiner Heiligkeitaus vielen Nöthen errettet und mannigfacher Todesgefahr entrissen, den, der so große Zeichen und Wunder S. 180 Gottes dem Volke gethan; der herrliche und wunderbare Werke zu ihrer Wohlfahrt vollbrachte; ihn, der über die Ägyptier zehn Plagen hereinbrechen ließ und das rothe Meer so theilte, daß die Wasser von der einen und der andern Seite wie eine Mauer standen und er das Volk durch die Wellen wie durch eine trockene Wüste führte, den Pharao und die Ägyptier aber und die ganze Menge in der Meerestiefe versenkte; ihn, der durch Holz² ihnen die Quelle süß machte, und der aus dem harten Felsen für die Durstenden Wasser hervorbrachte, der ihnen Manna vom Himmel und Fleisch aus der Luft gab, der ihnen Nachts die Feuersäule als Licht und Führer gab und beim Tag die Wolkensäule zum Schutz gegen die Hitze der Sonne, welcher das Gesetz Gottes aus Gottes Mund, Hand und Schrift auf steinernen Tafeln eingegraben ihnen gab, den Dekalog in der Zahl der Vollkommenheit; gegen ihn, mit welchem Gott von Angesicht zu Angesicht geredet, wie Jemand mit seinem Freunde spricht, und von welchem der Herr sagte: „Es ist kein Prophet aufgestanden wie Moses: gegen Diesen erhoben sich die Söhne Kore's und Ruben's, und sie warfen Steine gegen Moses, der da betete und sprach: Du mögest nicht auf ihr Opfer achten.„ Und es erschien die Herrlichkeit Gottes: die Einen verschlang die Erde, die Andern verzehrte das Feuer und so hat für die Urheber des Irrthums und des Schisma, welche da sprachen: „Laßt uns selbst einen Führer setzen!“ die Erde ihren Schooß geöffnet und sie verschlungen und ihre Zelte sammt dem Zugehör, und sie stiegen lebendig in den Hades hinab; die Söhne des Kore aber vertilgte er durch Feuer.

III. Concerning the Virtue of Moses and the Incredulity of the Jewish Nation, and What Wonderful Works God Did Among Them.

And they raised a sedition against Moses the servant of God, the meekest of all men,¹ and faithful, and affronted² so great a man with the highest ingratitude; him who was their lawgiver, and guardian, and high priest, and king, the administrator of divine things; one that showed as a creator the mighty works of the Creator; the meekest man, freest from arrogance, and full of fortitude, and most benign in his temper; one who had delivered them from many dangers, and freed them from several deaths by his holiness; who had done so many signs and wonders from God before the people, and had performed glorious and wonderful works for their benefit; who had³ brought the ten plagues upon the Egyptians; who had divided the Red Sea, and had separated the waters as a wall on this side and on that side, and had led the people through them as through a dry wilderness,⁴ and had drowned Pharaoh and the Egyptians, and all that were in company with them;⁵ and had made the fountain sweet for them with wood, and had brought water out of the stony rock for them when they were thirsty;⁶ and had given them manna out of heaven, and had distributed flesh to them out of the air;⁷ and had afforded them a pillar of fire in the night to enlighten and conduct them, and a pillar of a cloud to shadow them in the day, by reason of the violent heat of the sun;⁸ and had exhibited to them the law of God, engraven from the mouth, and hand, and writing of God, in tables of stone, the perfect number of ten commandments;⁹ "to whom God spake face to face, as if a man spake to his friend;"¹⁰ of whom He said, "And there arose not a prophet like unto Moses."¹¹ Against him arose the followers of Corah, and the Reubenites,¹² and threw stones at Moses, who prayed, and said: "Accept not Thou their offering."¹³ And the glory of God appeared, and sent some down into the earth, and burnt up others with fire; and so, as to those ringleaders of this schismatical deceit which said, "Let us make ourselves a leader,"¹⁴ the earth opened its mouth, and swallowed them up, and their tents, and what appertained to them, and they went down alive into hell; but he destroyed the followers of Corah with fire.
