14. Von den Predigern der katholischen Lehre und ihren Vorschriften.

Diesertwegen haben wir: Petrus¹ und Andreas, Jakobus und Johannes, die Söhne des Zebedäus, Philippus und Bartholomäus, Thomas und Matthäus, Jakobus, der Sohn des Alphäus, und Lebbäus, genannt Thaddäus, und Simon, der Kananäer, und Matthias,² statt des Judas uns zugetheilt, und Jakobus, der Bruder des Herrn und Bischof zu Jerusalem, und Paulus,³ der Lehrer der Heiden und das Gefäß der Auserwählung,⁴ uns alle zugleich jetzt versammelt und haben diese katholische Lehre zu eurer Bestärkung geschrieben, weil uns der Welt-Episkopat anvertraut worden ist, kraft dessen wir euch kund thun, daß nur ein allmächtiger Gott sei und ausser ihm kein anderer, und dieser allein zu verehren und anzubeten durch Jesum Christum unsern Herrn im hl. Geiste; daß von den hl. Schriften, Gesetz und Propheten, Gebrauch zu machen sei, daß man die Eltern verehren, jede gesetzwidrige Handlung meiden, an die Auferstehung glauben, ein Gericht und eine Wiedervergeltung erwarten und alles von ihm Erschaffene als Werk Gottes mit Dankbarkeit genießen und Nichts für schlecht halten solle; daß man die Ehe rechtmäßig eingehen müsse, denn eine solche Ehe ist tadellos, da auch „vom Herrn Mann und Weib zusammen verbunden werden”⁵ und der Herr spricht: „Der im Anfang schuf, hat sie als Mann und Weib geschaffen und gesagt: Um dessentwillen wird der Mensch seinen Vater und die Mutter verlassen und seinem Weibe anhängen, und sie werden zwei sein in einem Fleische.”⁶ Nach der Verehelichung sollst du also die Unschuldige nicht entlassen; denn der Herr sagt: „Wache über deinen Geist und entlasse nicht das Weib deiner Jugend; denn sie ist die Gefährtin deines Lebens und Rest (Ergänzung) deines S. 195 Geistes; und ich bin der Schöpfer, sonst Niemand.”⁷ Es sagt auch der Herr: „Was Gott verbunden hat, soll der Mensch nicht trennen.“ ”⁸Das Weib ist Lebensgefährtin, von Gott verbunden zu einem Leibe aus zweien; wer aber das Eine wieder in zwei auflöst, ist ein Feind der Schöpfung Gottes und ein Widersacher seiner Vorsehung. Deßgleichen wer ein fremdes Weib behält, verstoßt gegen das Gesetz der Natur. Wer eine Ehebrecherin behält, ist ein Thor und ein Gottloser.“⁹ Trenne sie von deinem Leibe;”¹⁰ denn eine Gehilfin ist sie dir nicht, sondern hinterlistlg hat sie ihren Sinn einem Andern zugewandt. Die Beschneidung dem Fleische nach wollen wir nicht, sondern den Gläubigen genüge die Beschneidung des Herzens im Geiste. Denn der Herr sagt: „Beschneidet euch euerm Gott und thut weg die Vorhaut eures Herzens.”¹¹

XIV. Who Were the Preachers of the Catholic Doctrine, and Which are the Commandments Given by Them.

On whose account also we, who are now assembled in one place,--Peter and Andrew; James and John, sons of Zebedee; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew; James the son of Alphaeus, and Lebbaeus who is surnamed Thaddaeus; and Simon the Canaanite,¹ and Matthias, who instead of Judas was numbered with us; and James the brother of the Lord and bishop of Jerusalem, and Paul the teacher of the Gentiles, the chosen vessel, having all met together, have written to you this Catholic doctrine for the confirmation of you, to whom the oversight of the universal Church is committed: wherein we declare unto you, that there is only one God Almighty, besides whom there is no other, and that you must worship and adore Him alone, through Jesus Christ our Lord, in the most holy Spirit;² that you are to make use of the sacred Scriptures, the law, and the prophets; to honour your parents; to avoid all unlawful actions; to believe the resurrection and the judgment, and to expect the retribution; and to use all His creatures with thankfulness, as the works of God, and having no evil in them; to marry after a lawful manner, for such marriage is unblameable. For "the woman is suited to the man by the Lord;"³ and the Lord says: "He that made them from the beginning, made them male and female; and said, For this cause shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they two shall be one flesh."⁴ Nor let it be esteemed lawful after marriage to put her away who is without blame. For says He: "Thou shalt take care to thy spirit, and shalt not forsake the wife of thy youth; for she is the partner⁵ of thy life, and the remains of thy spirit. I and no other have made her."⁶ For the Lord says: "What God has joined together, let no man put asunder."⁷ For the wife is the partner of life, united by God unto one body from two. But he that divides that again into two which is become one, is the enemy of the creation of God, and the adversary of His providence. In like manner, he that retains her that is corrupted is a transgressor of the law of nature; since "he that retains an adulteress is foolish and impious."⁸ For says He, "Cut her off from thy flesh;"⁹ for she is not an help, but a snare, bending her mind from thee to another. Nor be ye circumcised in your flesh, but let the circumcision which is of the heart by the Spirit suffice for the faithful; for He says, "Be ye circumcised to your God, and be circumcised in the foreskin of your heart."¹⁰
