15. Die Taufe soll nur einmal ertheilt werden, nie aber von einem Ketzer.

Imgleichen sollt ihr euch mit einer Taufe allein begnügen, der auf den Tod des Herrn gespendeten,¹ nicht mit jener, welche verrufene Häretiker, sondern welche untadelhafte Priester im Namen des Vaters, des Sohnes und des hl. Geistes spenden. Weder die von den Gottlosen (Ketzern) gespendete sollt ihr annehmen, noch die von den Gottesfürchtigen ertheilte durch eine zweite verungiltigen. Denn wie ein Gott ist, ist ein Christus und ein Paraklet und nur ein leiblicher Tod des Herrn,² so sei auch nur eine die auf denselben gespendete Taufe. Die aber von Ketzern sich taufen lassen, beflecken sich und nehmen Theil an ihrer Schuld; denn jene sind nicht Priester. Der Herr spricht zu ihnen: „Weil du die Erkenntniß verwirfst, verwerf’ ich dich S. 196 auch, daß du nicht mehr mein Priester seist.„³ Und die von ihnen Getauften sind nicht geheiligt (μῦσται), sondern befleckt, und sie empfangen nicht Vergebung der Sünden, sondern die Fesseln der Gottlosigkeit. Aber nicht nur Dieß, sondern auch die, welche die Getauften zum zweiten Mal zu taufen versuchen, kreuzigen den Herrn wiederholt, tödten ihn zum zweiten Mal, verlachen das Göttliche, verhöhnen das Heilige, verspotten den hl. Geist, entehren das hl. Blut wie gemeines, handeln gottlos gegen den, welcher (seinen Sohn) gesandt hat, gegen den, der gelitten hat, und gegen den, der das Zeugniß gegeben. Aber auch der, welcher aus Geringschätzung sich nicht will taufen lassen, wird wie ein Ungläubiger verurtheilt und als ein Undankbarer und Thor gebrandmarkt werden. Denn es spricht der Herr: „Wer nicht getauft ist mit Wasser und Geist, der kann in das Reich Gottes nicht eingehen.“⁴ Und wiederum: „Wer da glaubet und getauft ist, der wird selig werden; wer aber nicht glaubt, der wird verdammt werden.„⁵Wer aber sagt: „Wenn es an's Sterben geht, werde ich sorgen, daß ich getauft werde, damit ich inzwischen nicht mehr sündige und die Taufgnade verliere,“ der kennt Gott nicht und vergißt seine Natur; „du sollst es nicht verschieben, dich zum Herrn zu bekehren;⁶ denn du weißt nicht, was der kommende Tag bringt.„⁷ Aber auch euere Kinder taufet und erziehet sie in der Zucht und Lehre des Herrn. Der Heiland sagt: „Lasset die Kindlein zu mir kommen und wehret es ihnen nicht!“⁸

XV. That We Ought Not to Rebaptize, Nor to Receive that Baptism Which is Given by the Ungodly, Which is Not Baptism, But a Pollution.

Be ye likewise contented with one baptism alone, that which is into the death of the Lord; not that which is conferred by wicked heretics, but that which is conferred by unblameable priests, "in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:"¹ and let not that which comes from the ungodly be received by you, nor let that which is done by the godly be disannulled by a second. For as there is one God, one Christ, and one Comforter, and one death of the Lord in the body, so let that baptism which is unto Him be but one. But those that receive polluted baptism from the ungodly will become partners in their opinions. For they are not priests. For God says to them: "Because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee from the office of a priest to me."² Nor indeed are those that are baptized by them initiated, but are polluted, not receiving the remission of sins, but the bond of impiety. And, besides, they that attempt to baptize those already initiated crucify the Lord afresh, slay Him a second time, laugh at divine and ridicule holy things, affront the Spirit, dishonour the sacred blood of Christ as common blood, are impious against Him that sent, Him that suffered, and Him that witnessed. Nay, he that, out of contempt, will not be baptized, shall be condemned as an unbeliever, and shall be reproached as ungrateful and foolish. For the Lord says: "Except a man be baptized of water and of the Spirit, he shall by no means enter into the kingdom of heaven."³ And again: "He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned."⁴ But he that says, When I am dying I will be baptized, lest I should sin and defile my baptism, is ignorant of God, and forgetful of his own nature. For "do not thou delay to turn unto the Lord, for thou knowest not what the next day will bring forth."⁵ Do you also baptize your infants, and bring them up in the nurture and admonition of God. For says He: "Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not."⁶
