29. Das Weib soll ihrem Mann in aller Liebe unterworfen sein und der Mann sein Weib lieben wie seinen eigenen Leib.

Ihr Weiber seid unterthan euern Männern und haltet sie in Ehren, und mit Furcht und Liebe dienet S. 215 ihnen,¹ ähnlich der Sara,² welche den Abraham so sehr ehrte, daß sie nicht einmal beim Namen ihn anzureden wagte, sondern ihn ihren Herrn nannte, indem sie sprach: „Mein Herr aber ist ein Greis.„³ In gleicher Weise sollet ihr Männer eure Weiber lieben,⁴ wie euern eigenen Leib, als Lebensgefährtinen, als Gehilfinen zur Kindererzeugung. Denn die Schrift sagt: „Freue dich mit dem Weibe deiner Jugend, als deine geliebte Hirschkuh und dein reizendes Füllen soll sie mit dir verkehren; als deine Eigene soll sie dich geleiten und allzeit bei dir sein; denn von ihrer Liebe getragen wirst du sehr alt werden.“⁵ Liebet sie also wie euere Glieder, wie euere Leiber; denn es steht geschrieben: „Der Herr ist Zeuge zwischen dir und dem Weibe deiner Jugend, sie ist deine Gefährtin, und kein Anderer hat (das so) gemacht; sie ist ein Stück (Rest) deines Geistes, und wachet über euern Geist; und du sollst das Weib deiner Jugend nicht verlassen.“⁶ Wenn Mann und Weib in gesetzlicher Ehe zusammenkommen und mit einander das Ehebett verlassen, so sollen sie, ohne abergläubische Gebräuche zu befolgen, mit einander beten; auch wenn sie keine Waschung vorgenommen haben, sind sie rein. Wer aber ein fremdes Weib verführt und sich selbst befleckt oder mit einer Hure sich verunreinigt hat, trägt eine Makel an sich, welche durch alle Flüsse der Erde nicht abgewaschen werden kann.

XXXIX. How Wives Ought to Be Subject to Their Own Husbands, and Husbands Ought to Love Their Own Wives.

Ye wives, be subject to your own husbands, and have them in esteem, and serve them with fear and love, as holy Sarah honoured Abraham. For she could not endure to call him by his name, but called him lord, when she said, "My lord is old."¹ In like manner, ye husbands, love your own wives as your own members, as partners in life, and fellow-helpers for the procreation of children. For says He, "Rejoice with the wife of thy youth. Let her conversation be to thee as a loving hind, and a pleasant foal; let her alone guide thee, and be with thee at all times: for if thou beest every way encompassed with her friendship, thou wilt be happy in her society."² Love them therefore as your own members, as your very bodies; for so it is written, "The Lord has testified between thee and between the wife of thy youth; and she is thy partner, and another has not made her: and she is the remains of thy spirit;" and, "Take heed to your spirit, and do not forsake the wife of thy youth."³ An husband, therefore, and a wife, when they company together in lawful marriage, and rise from one another, may pray without any observations, and without washing are clean. But whosoever corrupts and defiles another man's wife, or is defiled with an harlot, when he arises up from her, though he should wash himself in the entire ocean and all the rivers, cannot be clean.
