1. Es gibt zwei Wege, die der Mensch gehen kann; der eine führt zum Leben, der andere zum Verderben.

S. 218 Gleichwie Moses, der Gesetzgeber, zu den Israeliten sprach: „Siehe, ich habe vor euer Angesicht gelegt den Weg des Lebens oder des Todes” und hinzufügte: „Wählet das Leben, auf daß ihr lebet,”¹ und wie Elias, der Prophet, zum Volke sprach: „Wie lange noch werdet ihr an euern beiden Knien hinken? Wenn Gott Herr ist, so folget ihm;”² ebenso sprach auch der Herr Jesus: „Niemand kann zwei Herren dienen; denn entweder wird er den einen hassen und den andern lieben, oder er wird dem einen anhangen und den andern verachten.”³ Das Nämliche sprechen folge- S. 219 richtig auch wir aus als Nachfolger des göttlichen Meisters, „welcher aller Menschen und besonders der Gläubigen Heiland ist.”⁴ Es gibt, wie wir lehren, zwei Wege, einen zum Leben und einen zum Tode. Beide haben aber keinen Zusammenhang mit einander; denn großer Unterschied besteht zwischen ihnen, ja sie sind sogar ganz entgegengesetzter Natur; natürlich ist der Weg zum Leben, eingeschmuggelt ist der zum Tode, welcher besteht nicht nach dem Willen Gottes, sondern nach der Hinterlist des Teufels.⁵

Constitutions of the Holy Apostles

I. That There are Two Ways,--The One Natural, of Life, and the Other Introduced Afterwards, of Death; And that the Former is from God, and the Latter of Error, from the Snares of the Adversary.

The lawgiver Moses said to the Israelites, "Behold, I have set before your face the way of life and the way of death;"¹ and added, "Choose life, that thou mayest live."² Elijah the prophet also said to the people: "How long will you halt with both your legs? If the Lord be God, follow Him."³ The Lord Jesus also said justly: "No one can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other."⁴ We also, following our teacher Christ, "who is the Saviour of all men, especially of those that believe,"⁵ are obliged to say that there are two ways--the one of life, the other of death;⁶ which have no comparison one with another, for they are very different,⁷ or rather entirely separate; and the way of life is that of nature, but that of death was afterwards introduced,--it not being according to the mind of God, but from the snares of the adversary.⁸
