5. Den Weg des Verderbens wandelt der Arglistige und Hochmüthige, der Zornige, Neidische und Haßsüchtige.

Sei nicht arglistig, nicht hochmüthig; denn den Stolzen widerstehet Gott.¹ Im Gericht sollst du kein Ansehen der Person nehmen, denn das Gericht ist des Herrn.² Du sollst keinen Menschen hassen, du sollst deinen Bruder gründlich überführen (des Unrechtes), und S. 223 du wirst seinetwegen nicht sündigen.³ überweise auch den Weisen, und er wird dich lieben.⁴ Fliehe alles Böse und was ihm gleicht; denn es heißt: „Halte dich vom Unrecht ferne, und Furcht wird dir nicht nahen.”⁵ Sei nicht zornig, neidisch und eifersüchtig, damit dir nicht Gleiches widerfahre, wie dem Kain und Saul und Joab; denn der eine hat seinen Bruder Abel getödtet,⁶ weil er vor Gott genehm erfunden und sein Opfer den Vorzug erhalten: der andere verfolgte den frommen David,⁷ welcher den Philister Goliath getödtet, aus Neid wegen des Lobes der Reigentänzerinen; der dritte hat mit dem Schwerte zwei Kriegsfeldherren gemordet, Abner, den Führer Israels, und Amasa, den Führer Judas.⁸

V. The Prohibition of Malignity, Acceptation of Persons, Wrath, Malice, and Envy.

Thou shalt not be an hypocrite, lest thy "portion be with them."¹ Thou shalt not be ill-natured nor proud: for "God resisteth the proud."² "Thou shalt not accept persons in judgment; for the judgment is the Lord's." "Thou shalt not hate any man; thou shalt surely reprove thy brother, and not become guilty on his account;"³ and, "Reprove a wise man, and he will love thee."⁴ Eschew all evil, and all that is like it: for says He, "Abstain from injustice, and trembling shall not come nigh thee."⁵ Be not soon angry, nor spiteful, nor passionate, nor furious, nor daring, lest thou undergo the fate of Cain, and of Saul, and of Joab: for the first of these slew his brother Abel, because Abel was found to be preferred before him with God, and because Abel's sacrifice was preferred;⁶ the second persecuted holy David, who had slain Goliah the Philistine, being envious of the praises of the women who danced;⁷ the third slew two generals of armies--Abner of Israel, and Amasa of Judah.⁸
