38. Danksagung für alle den Gerechten erwiesenen Gnaden.

Allmächtiger Herr, wir danken dir für Alles, besonders dafür, daß du dein Mitleid und Erbarmen uns nicht entzogen hast; denn durch alle Zeiten und Geschlechter gibst du Rettung, Heil, Hilfe und Schutz, denn du hast Hilfe gespendet in den Tagen des Enos und Enoch, des Moses und Jesus, zur Zeit der Richter, des Samuel und Elias und der Propheten, in den Tagen Davids und der Könige, der Esther und des Mardochäus, der Judith, des Judas S. 247 Makkabäus und seiner Brüder. Auch in unseren Tagen warst du uns ein Helfer und zwar durch deinen Sohn, den erhabenen Hohenpriester Jesum Christum; denn er hat uns befreit vom Tode und durch Nahrung uns dem Hunger entrissen, von Krankheit geheilt, vor böser Zunge geschützt. Für Dieß alles sagen wir dir Dank durch Christum. Du hast uns auch gegeben eine Stimme zum Reden und eine zweckdienliche Zunge, einem Plektrum vergleichbar, gleichsam als Werkzeug beigefügt; den Geschmack und Tastsinn, das Gesicht zum Sehen; Ohren zum hören; den Geruch zum Riechen, Hände zum Arbeiten, Füße zum Gehen. Das alles bildest du aus kleinen Anfängen im Mutterleibe, verleihst nach der Ausgestaltung (des Leibes) die unsterbliche Seele und bringst den Menschen hervor ans Licht. Das mit Vernunft begabte Wesen, nämlich den Menschen, hast du im Gesetze unterwiesen und durch Satzungen gereinigt; auf kurze Zeit überlassest du ihn der Auflösung und Verwesung und versprachst ihm seine Auferstehung. Reicht wohl die ganze Lebensdauer des Menschen und die lange Zeit der Jahrhunderte aus, um hiefür gebührend zu danken? Unmöglich ist es, in entsprechender Weise Dank abzustatten; nach Kräften aber sich dankbar zu erweisen, ist heilig und fromm. Denn du hast uns rein erhalten von der Gottlosigkeit Derer, welche mehrere Götter verehren, und hast uns befreit von der Sekte Derer, welche Christum getödtet haben und uns dem Irrthum und der Unwissenheit entrissen. Christum hast du in Menschengestalt zu uns Menschen gesendet, obwohl er eingeborner Gott ist; den hl. Geist ließest du in uns Wohnung nehmen, Engel hast du (über uns als Beschützer) aufgestellt; den Satan überhäuftest du mit Schmach; uns selbst riefst du aus dem Nichts in's Dasein, und nun, da wir hienieden wandeln, erhältst du uns; du setzest fest die Zahl der Lebensjahre, gibst Nahrung und ließest Buße predigen. Für Dieß alles sei dir Ruhm und Ehre durch Jesum Christum, jetzt und immer und in Ewigkeit. Amen.

Erwäget das Gesagte, o Brüder! Der Herr sei mit euch hier auf Erden und jenseits im Reiche seines Vaters, S. 248 welcher ihn auch gesendet und durch ihn¹ aus elender Sklaverei zur herrlichen Freiheit der Kinder Gottes uns erlöset und Allen, welche an den Herrn des Weltalls glauben, das ewige Leben verheissen hat. Es ist bereits im Vorgehenden gesagt worden, welch' eines christlichen Lebens sich Jene befleissen sollen, welche den Glauben an Christum angenommen haben, und in welcher Weise sie durch Christus Gott danken sollen. Es ist aber billig, daß wir auch Jenen, welche noch nicht getauft sind, die Hilfe nicht versagen.

XXXVIII. A Prayer for the Assistance of the Righteous.

We give Thee thanks for all things, O Lord Almighty, that Thou hast not taken away Thy mercies and Thy compassions from us; but in every succeeding generation Thou dost save, and deliver, and assist, and protect: for Thou didst assist in the days of Enos and Enoch, in the days of Moses and Joshua, in the days of the judges, in the days of Samuel and of Elijah and of the prophets, in the days of David and of the kings, in the days of Esther and Mordecai, in the days of Judith, in the days of Judas Maccabeus and his brethren, and in our days hast Thou assisted us by Thy great High Priest, Jesus Christ Thy Son. For He has delivered us from the sword, and hath freed us from famine, and sustained us; has delivered us from sickness, has preserved us from an evil tongue. For all which things do we give Thee thanks through Christ, who has given us an articulate voice to confess withal, and added to it a suitable tongue as an instrument to modulate withal, and a proper taste, and a suitable touch, and a sight for contemplation, and the hearing of sounds, and the smelling of vapours, and hands for work, and feet for walking. And all these members dost Thou form from a little drop in the womb; and after the formation dost Thou bestow on it an immortal soul, and producest it into the light as a rational creature, even man. Thou hast instructed him by Thy laws, improved him by Thy statutes; and when Thou bringest on a dissolution for a while, Thou hast promised a resurrection. Wherefore what life is sufficient, what length of ages will be long enough, for men to be thankful? To do it worthily it is impossible, but to do it according to our ability is just and right. For Thou hast delivered us from the impiety of polytheism, and from the heresy of the murderers of Christ; Thou hast delivered us from error and ignorance; Thou hast sent Christ among men as a man, being the only begotten God; Thou hast made the Comforter to inhabit among us; Thou hast set angels over us; Thou hast put the devil to shame; Thou hast brought us into being when we were not. Thou takest care of us when made; Thou measurest out life to us; Thou affordest us food; Thou hast promised repentance. Glory and worship be to Thee for all these things, through Jesus Christ,¹ now and ever, and through all ages. Amen.

Meditate on these things, brethren; and the Lord be With you upon earth, and in the kingdom of His Father, who both sent Him, and has "delivered us by Him from the bondage of corruption into His glorious liberty;"² and has promised life to those who through Him have believed in the God of the whole world.

Now, after what manner those ought to live that are initiated into Christ, and what thanksgivings they ought to send up to God through Christ, has been said in the foregoing directions. But it is reasonable not to leave even those who are not yet initiated without assistance.
