23. Von den Bekennern;¹ Konstitution des Jakobus Alphäus.

Ich aber, Jakobus des Alphäus, verordne bezüglich der Bekenner: Bekenner wird man nicht durch die Weihe, denn das S. 293 ist Sache des freien Willens und der Geduld; großer Ehre würdig aber ist Derjenige, welcher vor Völkern und Königen den Namen Gottes und seines Christ bekannte. Wenn man ihn als Bischof oder Priester oder Diakon braucht, soll er geweiht werden. Wenn aber ein Bekenner, ohne Weihe, eine solche Würde unter dem Vorschütze des Bekenntnisses sich anmaßt und an sich gerissen hat, der werde abgesetzt und verjagt; denn er ist kein Bekenner, vielmehr hat er die Anordnung Christi verläugnet und ist schlechter als ein Ungläubiger.

XXIII. Concerning the Confessors--The Constitution of James the Son of Alpheus.

And I James, the son of Alphaeus, make a constitution in regard to confessors: A confessor is not ordained; for he is so by choice and patience, and is worthy of great honour, as having confessed the name of God, and of His Christ, before nations and kings. But if there be occasion, he is to be ordained¹ either a bishop, priest, or deacon. But if any one of the confessors who is not ordained snatches to himself any such dignity upon account of his confession, let the same person be deprived and rejected; for he is not in such an office, since he has denied the constitution of Christ, and is "worse than an infidel."²
