41. Gebet für die Verstorbenen.

Lasset uns beten für unsere Brüder, welche in Christo ruhen, damit der menschenfreundliche Gott, der die Seele des Dahingeschiedenen aufgenommen hat, ihm nachlasse jede freiwillige und unfreiwillige Sünde und gütig und milde geworden ihn versetze in das Land der Frommen, die da ruhen im Schooße Abrahams, Isaaks unr Jakobs, mit Allen, die von Anbeginn Gott gefallen und seinen Willen erfüllt haben, allwo kein Schmerz, keine Trauer, kein Seufzen mehr ist. Lasset uns aufstehen! Uns selbst und wechselseitig wollen wir uns dem ewigen Gott anempfehlen, durch das Wort, welches war im Anfang. Und der Bischof spreche: Der du unsterblich von Natur und kein Ende hast, von dem alles Unsterbliche und Sterbliche seinen Ursprung genommen hat: der du das vernünftige Menschenwesen, den Weltbürger bei seiner Schaffung sterblich gemacht und ihm die Auferstehung versprochen hast; der du den Henoch und Elias den Tod nicht kosten ließest. Gott Abrabams, Isaaks und Jakobs,¹ der du nicht bist ein Gott der Todten, sondern der S. 306 Lebendigen, da ja die Seelen Aller bei dir leben und die Geister der Gerechten in deiner Hand sind,²sie, die kein Pein mehr berührt, denn alle sind geheiligt und unter dem Schütze deiner Hände:³ sieh auch jetzt auf diesen deinen Diener herab, den du auserwählt und aufgenommen hast in ein besseres Loos und verzeihe ihm, wenn er freiwillig oder unfreiwillig gefehlt hat, stelle ihm wohlwollende Engel (schirmend) zur Seite und versetz' ihn in den Schooß der Patriarchen, Propheten, Apostel und Aller, welche von Ewigkeit her dir wohlgefallen haben, wo nicht ist Trauer Schmerz, Wehklagen, vielmehr die stille Wohnung der Frommen und zugleich das ruhige Land der Gerechten und Derjenigen, welche in demselben schauen die Glorie deines Christus, durch welchen dir Lob, Ehre, Preis Danksagung, Anbetung im hl. Geiste in Ewigkeit. Amen. Und der Diakon spreche: „Verneiget euch und empfanget den Segen!„ Und der Bischof verrichtet die Danksagung für dieselben und spricht Dieses: „Rette, o Herr, dein Volk und segne dein Erbtheil,⁴ welches du erworben hast durch das kostbare Blut deines Christus; weide sie unter deiner Rechten, beschütze sie unter deinen Flügeln und verleihe ihnen, daß sie den guten Kampf kämpfen,⁵ den Lebenslauf vollenden, den Glauben bewahren unerschütterlich, schuld- und tadellos, durch unsern Herrn Jesum Christum, deinen geliebten Sohn, mit welchem dir sei Ehre, Lob und Anbetung und dem hl. Geiste in Ewigkeit. Amen.“

XLI. The Bidding Prayer for Those Departed.

Let us pray for our brethren that are at rest¹ in Christ, that God, the lover of mankind, who has received his soul, may forgive him every sin, voluntary and involuntary, and may be merciful and gracious to him, and give him his lot in the land of the pious that are sent into the bosom of Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, with all those that have pleased Him and done His will from the beginning of the world, whence all sorrow, grief, and lamentation are banished. Let us arise, let us dedicate ourselves and one another to the eternal God, through that Word which was in the beginning. And let the bishop say: O Thou who art by nature immortal, and hast no end of Thy being, from whom every creature, whether immortal or mortal, is derived; who didst make man a rational creature, the citizen of this world, in his constitution mortal, and didst add the promise of a resurrection; who didst not suffer Enoch and Elijah to taste of death: "the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, who art the God of them, not as of dead, but as of living persons: for the souls of all men live with Thee, and the spirits of the righteous are in Thy hand, which no torment can touch;"² for they are all sanctified under Thy hand: do Thou now also look upon this Thy servant, whom Thou hast selected and received into another state, and forgive him if voluntarily or involuntarily he has sinned, and afford him merciful angels, and place him in the bosom of the patriarchs, and prophets, and apostles, and of all those that have pleased Thee from the beginning of the world, where there is no grief, sorrow, nor lamentation; but the peaceable region of the godly, and the undisturbed land of the upright, and of those that therein see, the glory of Thy Christ; by whom³ glory, honour, and worship, thanksgiving, and adoration be to Thee, in the Holy Spirit, for ever. Amen. And let the deacon say: Bow down, and receive the blessing. And let the bishop give thanks for them, saying as follows: "O Lord, save Thy people, and bless Thine inheritance,"⁴ which Thou hast purchased with the precious blood of Thy Christ. Feed them under Thy right hand, and cover them under Thy wings, and grant that they may "fight the good fight, and finish their course, and keep the faith"⁵ immutably, unblameably, and unreprovably, through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy beloved Son, with whom glory, honour, and worship be to Thee and to the Holy Spirit for ever. Amen.
