26. Die geistliche Würde ist so erhaben, daß der Bischof, der Diakon und die Diakonissin mit den drei göttlichen Personen, die Priester mit den Aposteln verglichen werden können.

Der Bischof ist des Wortes Diener, Wächter der Wissenschaft, Mittler zwischen Gott und euch in seinen gottesdienstlichen Verrichtungen, Lehrer der Frömmigkeit, nächst Gott euer Vater, der durch Wasser und Geist euch zur Kindschaft wieder geboren hat. Dieser ist euer König und Herr. Dieser ist nächst Gott euer irdischer Gott, welchem ihr Ehre zu erweisen schuldig seid. Denn von Diesem und ihm Gleichen spricht Gott: „Ich habe gesagt: Ihr seid Götter und Söhne des Allerhöchsten alle,”¹ und: „Die Götter sollst du nicht schmähen.”² Denn der Bischof soll euch vorstehen gleichsam mit göttlicher Würde geschmückt; deßhalb herrscht er über den Klerus und regiert alles Volk. Der Diakon aber steht diesem zur Seite, wie Christus dem Vater, und leistet ihm Dienste, in Allem unbescholten wie Christus, der Nichts aus sich selbst tut, der allezeit that, was dem Vater wohlgefällig. Die Diakonissin werde von euch nach Art des heiligen Geistes geehrt; sie thut und redet Nichts ohne den Diakon, gleichwie auch der Paraklet von sich Nichts redet oder thut, sondern Christum verherrlichend erwartet sie seinen Willen, und wie Niemand an Christum glaubet ohne Eingebung des heiligen Geistes, so soll kein Weib ohne die Diakonissin vor den Diakon oder den Bischof treten. Die Presbyter betrachtet als unsere (der Apostel) Stellvertreter; sie sind die Lehrer der Wissenschaft Gottes, wie auch der Herr bei unserer Sendung sprach: „Gehet hin, lehret alle Völker und taufet sie im Namen des Vaters, des Sohnes und des hl. Geistes!”³ Die Wittwen und Waisen sollen von euch nach Art des Opferaltares gehalten werden, die S. 69 Jungfrauen sollen wie Rauchfaß und Rauchwerk geehrt sein.

XXVI. According to What Patterns and Dignity Every Order of the Clergy is Appointed by God.

The bishop, he is the minister of the word, the keeper of knowledge, the mediator between God and you in the several parts of your divine worship. He is the teacher of piety; and, next after God, he is your father, who has begotten you again to the adoption of sons by water and the Spirit. He is your ruler and governor; he is your king and potentate; he is, next after God, your earthly god, who has a right to be honoured by you. For concerning him, and such as he, it is that God pronounces, "I have said, Ye are gods; and ye are all children of the Most High."¹ And, "Ye shall not speak evil of the gods."² For let the bishop preside over you as one honoured with the authority of God, which he is to exercise over the clergy, and by which he is to govern all the people. But let the deacon minister to him, as Christ does to His Father;³ and let him serve him unblameably in all things, as Christ does nothing of Himself, but does always those things that please His Father. Let also the deaconess be honoured by you in the place of the Holy Ghost, and not do or say anything without the deacon; as neither does the Comforter say or do anything of Himself, but gives glory to Christ by waiting for His pleasure. And as we cannot believe on Christ without the teaching of the Spirit, so let not any woman address herself to the deacon or bishop without the deaconess. Let the presbyters be esteemed by you to represent us the apostles, and let them be the teachers of divine knowledge; since our Lord, when He sent us, said, "Go ye, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you."⁴ Let the widows and orphans be esteemed as representing the altar of burnt-offering; and let the virgins be honoured as representing the altar of incense, and the incense itself.
