32. Kein Diakon darf ohne Erlaubniß des Bischofs Etwas verschenken, sei es auch an die Armen.

Wenn du, o Diakon, einen Dürftigen weißt, so mache den Bischof darauf aufmerksam und bitte ihn für denselben, gib aber nicht heimlich, zum Schaden desselben, damit du nicht Murren gegen ihn veranlassest; denn nicht seinetwegen entsteht Murren, sondern gegen Gott, den Herrn, und du wirst mit den Übrigen dieselben Worte hören, wie Aaron und Maria, als sie den Moses verläumdeten: „Warum habt ihr euch nicht gefürchtet, herabzusetzen meinen Knecht Moses?„¹ Und Moses selbst sprach zu denen, welche gegen ihn sich verbunden hatten: „Nicht wider uns ist euer Murren, sondern wider den Herrn.“² Denn wenn der, welcher einen Laien Raka oder Narr heißt, es nicht ungestraft thut,„³ weil er den Namen Christi an einem Christen beschimpft; wird dann der straflos ausgehen, der einem Bischof übel nachredet, einem Bischof, durch welchen der Herr mittelst Handauflegung euch den hl. Geist gegeben hat, durch welchen ihr die hl. Glaubenssätze ge- S. 74 lernt, Gott erkannt und an Christum geglaubt habet, durch welchen ihr von Gott aufgenommen worden seid, durch welchen ihr bezeichnet wurdet mit dem Öle der Freude und der Salbe der Wissenschaft, durch welchen ihr Kinder des Lichtes geworden, durch welchen der Herr in der Taufe kraft der Handauflegung des Bischofs Zeugniß gab, indem er über Jeden von euch die Worte ertönen ließ: „Du bist mein Sohn, heute hab' ich dich gezeugt“?⁴ Durch deinen Bischof hat dich, o Mensch, Gott an Kindes Statt angenommen; erkenn', o Sohn, deine rechte Mutter, liebe den, der nach Gott dein Vater ist, und ehre ihn.

XXXII. That the Deacon Must Not Make Any Distributions Without the Consent of the Bishop, Because that Will Turn to the Reproach of the Bishop.

If therefore, O deacon, thou knowest any one to be in distress, put the bishop in mind of him, and so give to him; but do nothing in a clandestine way, so as may tend to his reproach, lest thou raise a murmur against him; for the murmur will not be against him, but against the Lord God: and the deacon, with the rest, will hear what Aaron and Miriam heard, when they spake against Moses: "How is it that ye were not afraid to speak against my servant Moses?"¹ And again, Moses says to those who rose up against him: "Your murmuring is not against us, but against the Lord our God."² For if he that calls one of the laity Raka,³ or fool, shall not be unpunished, as doing injury to the name⁴ of Christ, how dare any man speak against his bishop, by whom the Lord gave the Holy Spirit among you upon the laying on of his hands, by whom ye have learned the sacred doctrines, and have known God, and have believed in Christ, by whom ye were known of God, by whom ye were sealed with the oil of gladness and the ointment of understanding, by whom ye were declared to be the children of light, by whom the Lord in your illumination testified by the imposition of the bishop's hands, and sent out His sacred voice upon every one of you, saying, "Thou art my son, this day have I begotten thee?"⁵ By thy bishop, O man, God adopts thee for His child. Acknowledge, O son, that right hand which was a mother to thee. Love him who, after God, is become a father to thee, and honour him.
