The Banquet of the Ten Virgins

Chapter I.--The Offering of Chastity a Great Gift. ¹

I pray you, Arete, that you will give your assistance now too, that I may seem to speak something worthy in the first place of yourself, and then of those who are present. For I am persuaded, having thoroughly learnt it from the sacred writings, that the greatest and most glorious offering and gift, to which there is nothing comparable, which men can offer to God, is the life ² of virginity. For although many accomplished many admirable things, according to their vows, in the law, they alone were said to fulfil a great vow who were willing to offer themselves of their free-will. For the passage runs thus: "And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, when either man or woman shall separate themselves...unto the Lord." ³ One vows to offer gold and silver vessels for the sanctuary when he comes, another to offer the tithe of his fruits, another of his property, another the best of his flocks, another consecrates his being; and no one is able to vow a great vow to the Lord, but he who has offered himself entirely to God.

I. Thallusa.

Thallusa.

Thallusa soll ein wenig innegehalten und etwas bei sich erwogen haben, dann habe sie begonnen: Ei, liebe Arete, ich möchte, daß du auch darin meine Gehilfin werdest, damit ich mit Worten an die Öffentlichkeit trete, die deiner und auch der Anwesenden würdig sind. Das größte und eindrucksvollste Weihgeschenk und Weihestück, dazu es kein Gegenstück von gleichem Wert gibt, das Menschen Gott darbringen könnten — das ist die Jungfrauschaft in Kampf und Streit! Davon bin ich fest überzeugt und ich habe diese Überzeugung aus der Hl. Schrift. Sonst hätte man nicht die allein, die sich selbst mit freiem Willen opfern wollten, Erfüller eines großen Gelübdes geheißen, wenn doch viele viel Gutes nach dem Gesetze zur Erfüllung ihrer Gelübde vollbrachten. Denn so heißt das Wort: „Und es sprach der Herr zu Moses: Sprich zu den Kindern Israels und sage ihnen: ein Mann oder ein Weib, das ein großes Gelübde tut, soll seine Reinheit weihen dem Herrn“¹. Der eine gelobt Gefäße aus Gold und Silber S. 323 in den Tempel zu bringen zum Opfer, der eine zu opfern den Zehnten von den Früchten, der andere von dem Vermögen; wieder einer weiht das beste von den Herden und ein andrer seine Existenz. Aber damit vermag keiner ein großes Gelübde dem Herrn zu tun, sondern erst der, der sich selbst Gott ganz darbringt. —
