34. Isaias' Weissagung über den Sturz des alten Babylons — angewendet auf Rom.

Aber da es unser Vorsatz war, über die Hure zu reden, so komm, du seliger Isaias, herbei. Sehen wir, was du über Babylon sagtest: „Steig herab, setz dich in den Staub, Jungfrau Tochter Babylon! Setze dich zur Erde; nicht ist ein Thron für die Tochter der Chaldäer; denn fürder wird man dich nicht nennen: Weichliche und Zarte. Nimm die Mühle und mahle Mehl, decke auf deine Schande, entkleide die Schulter, entblöße die Schenkel, durchwate die Flüsse. Enthüllt wird deine Scham und gesehen deine Schmach. Rache will ich nehmen, und widerstehen wird mir kein Mensch. Unser Erlöser — Herr der Heerschaaren ist sein Name — der Heilige Israels! Sitze stumm und gehe in's Dunkel, Tochter der Chaldäer; denn nicht fürder wird man dich nennen: „Herrin der Königreiche!“

34.

But as the task before us was to speak of the harlot, be thou with us, O blessed Isaiah. Let us mark what thou sayest about Babylon. "Come down, sit upon the ground, O virgin daughter of Babylon; sit, O daughter of the Chaldeans; thou shalt no longer be called tender and delicate. Take the millstone, grind meal, draw aside thy veil, ¹ shave the grey hairs, make bare the legs, pass over the rivers. Thy shame shall be uncovered, thy reproach shall be seen: I will take justice of thee, I will no more give thee over to men. As for thy Redeemer, (He is) the Lord of hosts, the Holy One of Israel is his name. Sit thou in compunction, get thee into darkness, O daughter of the Chaldeans: thou shalt no longer be called the strength of the kingdom.
