Treatise on Christ and Antichrist
14.
Thus did the Scriptures preach before-time of this lion and lion's whelp. And in like manner also we find it written regarding Antichrist. For Moses speaks thus: "Dan is a lion's whelp, and he shall leap from Bashan." 1 But that no one may err by supposing that this is said of the Saviour, let him attend carefully to the matter. "Dan," he says, "is a lion's whelp;" and in naming the tribe of Dan, he declared clearly the tribe from which Antichrist is destined to spring. For as Christ springs from the tribe of Judah, so Antichrist is to spring from the tribe of Dan. 2 And that the case stands thus, we see also from the words of Jacob: "Let Dan be a serpent, lying upon the ground, biting the horse's heel." 3 What, then, is meant by the serpent but Antichrist, that deceiver who is mentioned in Genesis, 4 who deceived Eve and supplanted Adam (pternisas, bruised Adam's heel)? But since it is necessary to prove this assertion by sufficient testimony, we shall not shrink from the task.

14. Wie Christus aus dem Stamme Juda, so der Antichrist aus dem Stamme Dan.
Ihn nun haben die Schriften als Löwen und als Jungen eines Löwen vorherverkündigt. Dasselbe ist auch von dem Antichrist gesagt worden. Denn Moses sagt so: „Ein junger Löwe ist Dan und wird aus Basan hervorspringen.“1 Damit sich aber Niemand täusche und meine, der Ausspruch beziehe sich auf den Erlöser, so möge er wohl aufmerken. „Dan,“ sagt er, „ist ein junger Löwe.“ Mit dem Ausspruche hat er den Stamm Dan bezeichnet, aus welchem dereinst der Antichrist geboren werden soll. Denn wie Christus aus dem Stamme Juda geboren ist, so wird der Antichrist aus dem Stamme Dan geboren werden. Daß dem so sei, sagt Jakob: „Dan wird sein eine Schlange, auf S. 23 der Erde sitzend, stechend des Pferdes Ferse.“2 Wer anders aber ist die Schlange als der Antichrist, jener Verführer, von dem in der Genesis gesagt wird, er habe die Eva verführt und den Adam überlistet? Da es aber nothwendig ist, das Gesagte durch mehrere Zeugnisse zu erhärten, so werden wir es nicht unterlassen.
