58.
Idle then is the excuse for stumbling, and petty the notions concerning the Word, of these Ario-maniacs, because it is written, ‘He was troubled,’ and ‘He wept.’ For they seem not even to have human feeling, if they are thus ignorant of man’s nature and properties; which do but make it the greater wonder, that the Word should be in such a suffering flesh, and neither prevented those who were conspiring against Him, nor took vengeance of those who were putting Him to death, though He was able, He who hindered some from dying, and raised others from the dead. And He let His own body suffer, for therefore did He come, as I said before, that in the flesh He might suffer, and thenceforth the flesh might be made impassible and immortal 1, and that, as we have many times said, contumely and other troubles might determine upon Him and come short of others after Him, being by Him annulled utterly; and that henceforth men might for ever abide 2 incorruptible, as a temple of the Word 3. Had Christ’s enemies thus dwelt on these thoughts, and recognised the ecclesiastical scope as an anchor for the faith, they would not have made shipwreck of the faith, nor been so shameless as to resist those who would fain recover them from their fall, and to deem those as enemies who are admonishing them to be religious 4.
Chapter XXX .— Objections continued, as in Chapters vii.—x.Whether the Son is begotten of the Father’s will? This virtually the same as whether once He was not? and used by the Arians to introduce the latter question. The Regula Fidei answers it at once in the negative by contrary texts. The Arians follow the Valentinians in maintaining a precedent will; which really is only exercised by God towards creatures. Instances from Scripture. Inconsistency of Asterius. If the Son by will, there must be another Word before Him. If God is good, or exist, by His will, then is the Son by His will. If He willed to have reason or wisdom, then is His Word and Wisdom at His will. The Son is the Living Will, and has all titles which denote connaturality. That will which the Father has to the Son, the Son has to the Father. The Father wills the Son and the Son wills the Father.
58 (continued). But 5, as it seems, a heretic is a wicked thing in truth, and in every respect his heart is depraved 6 and irreligious. For behold, though convicted on all points, and shewn to be utterly bereft of understanding, they feel no shame; but as the hydra of Gentile fable, when its former serpents were destroyed, gave birth to fresh ones, contending against the slayer of the old by the production of new, so also they, hostile 7 and hateful to God 8, as hydras 9, losing their life in the objections which they advance, invent for themselves other questions Judaic and foolish, and new expedients, as if Truth were their enemy, thereby to shew the rather that they are Christ’s opponents in all things.

Thus ends the exposition of texts, which forms the body of these Orations. It is remarkable that he ends as he began, with reference to the ecclesiastical scope, orRegula Fidei,which has so often come under our notice, vid.Or.ii. 35. n. 2. 44, n. 1, as if distinctly to tell us, that Scripture did not so force its meaning on the individual as to dispense with an interpreter, and as if his own deductions were not to be viewed merely in their own logical power, great as that power often is, but as under the authority of the Catholic doctrines which they subserve. Vergebens stellen sich also die Ariomaniten, als ob sie Ärgernis nähmen, und denken vom Worte gering, wenn geschrieben steht: „Er wurde betrübt“ und: „Er weinte“. Es scheint ihnen auch die menschliche Empfindung abzugehen, da sie die Natur der Menschen und, was diesen eigen ist, nicht kennen. Deshalb hätten S. 319 sie sich eher darüber wundern sollen, daß in einem solchen leidenden Fleische das Wort war und es weder denen wehrte, die ihm nachstellten, noch die strafte, die es töteten, obschon es die Macht dazu gehabt hätte, da es bei andern dem Tode wehrte und Tote von den Toten wiedererweckte, daß es vielmehr seinen Leib leiden ließ. Denn deshalb ist es, wie gesagt, auch gekommen, um im Fleische zu leiden und um für die Zukunft das Fleisch leidensunfähig und unsterblich zu machen. Auch sollten, wie wir schon oft gesagt haben, die Unbilden und die andern Zufälle dadurch, daß sie das Wort trafen, die Menschen nicht mehr berühren, sondern von ihm völlig ausgetilgt werden und die Menschen von nun an als ein Tempel des Wortes ewig unverweslich bleiben. Dächten auch die Christusfeinde so und würden sie in der kirchlichen Lehre den Anker ihres Glaubens anerkennen, so hatten sie weder im Glauben Schiffbruch gelitten1, noch wären sie so unverschämt, daß sie sogar denen gegenübertreten, die sie vom Fall wieder aufrichten wollen und gar in denen Feinde sehen, die sie zum gottesfürchtigen Glauben auffordern. Aber, wie es scheint, ist der Häretiker in Wahrheit ein Übel und hat ein Herz, das durch und durch von der Gottlosigkeit vergiftet ist. Denn sieh, obschon sie in allen Punkten widerlegt sind, und ihnen offenkundig jegliche Einsicht abgeht, so schämen sie sich doch nicht, sondern wie die sogenannte Hydra in der griechischen Mythologie, jenes Ungetüm, das immer wieder neue Schlangen gebar, wenn die ersten getötet wurden, und im Wettkampf mit dem Mörder immer neue hervorbrachte, so machen auch die Feinde und Widersacher Gottes, wenn ihr Vertrauen auf ihr Beweismaterial sinkt, wie Hydren andere jüdische und törichte Fragen ausfindig und kommen, wie wenn sie mit der Wahrheit in Feindschaft lebten, auf neue Einfälle, um sich noch mehr auf alle mögliche Weise als Christusfeinde zu verraten.
