Chapitre XLVIII

S’étant retiré, comme je l’ai dit, avec la résolution de demeurer un temps sans sortir de son monastère, et sans y laisser entrer personne, un nommé Martinien, qui exerçait le commandement sur des gens de guerre, vint troubler son repos pour implorer son assistance, à cause de sa fille qui était tourmentée par le démon. Après avoir longtemps frappé à sa porte, en le conjurant de sortir et de prier Dieu pour elle, Antoine ne lui ouvrit point ; mais regardant seulement d’en haut, il lui dit : Pourquoi me tourmentez-vous ainsi ? Je suis un homme comme vous. Mais si vous avez de la foi, priez Dieu, et il vous accordera ce que vous lui demanderez. Martinien crut, invoqua Jésus-Christ et, étant rentré chez lui, il trouva sa fille délivrée de l’esprit malin. Notre Seigneur qui a dit : Demandez et il vous sera donné, fit plusieurs autres miracles par son serviteur, sans qu’Antoine ouvrît sa porte. Car grand nombre de personnes affligées de divers maux demeurant assises au dehors de son monastère, étaient guéries en priant Dieu avec une foi vive et sincère.

48.

When therefore he had retired and determined to fix a time, after which neither to go forth himself nor admit anybody, Martinian, a military officer, came and disturbed Antony. For he had a daughter afflicted with an evil spirit. But when he continued for a long while knocking at the door, and asking him to come out and pray to God for his child, Antony, not bearing to open, looked out from above and said, ‘Man, why dost thou call on me? I also am a man even as you. But if you believe on Christ whom I serve, go, and according as you believe, pray to God, and it shall come to pass.’ Straightway, therefore, he departed, believing and calling upon Christ, and he received his daughter cleansed from the devil. Many other things also through Antony the Lord did, who saith, ‘Seek and it shall be given unto you ¹.’ For many of the sufferers, when he would not open his door, slept outside his cell, and by their faith and sincere prayers were healed.
