69. Kapitel. Antonius geht auf Bitten der Bischöfe nach Alexandria, um die Arianer zu widerlegen.¹

S. 755 Als einmal die Arianer die Lüge ausstreuten, er denke ebenso wie sie, da war er unwillig und zornig über sie. Er wurde dann von den Bischöfen und allen Brüdern gerufen, kam herunter von dem Berge, ging nach Alexandria und verdammte die Arianer; er erklärte, dies sei die letzte Häresie und ein Vorläufer des Antichrist. Er belehrte auch das Volk, der Sohn Gottes sei kein Geschöpf, noch sei er aus dem Nichtseienden geworden, sondern das Wort und die Weisheit seien ewig vom Wesen des Vaters. Deshalb ist es auch gottlos zu sagen: Es gab eine Zeit, da er nicht war; denn das Wort war immer zugleich mit dem Vater. Daher habt nicht die geringste Gemeinschaft mit den allergottlosesten Arianern; "denn keine Gemeinschaft hat das Licht mit der Finsternis".² Ihr sollt fromme Christen sein. Jene aber, die lehren, der Sohn Gottes aus dem Vater und das Wort sei ein Geschöpf, unterscheiden sich in nichts von den Heiden, die einem Geschöpf dienen statt Gott dem Schöpfer.³ Seid überzeugt, daß jedes Geschöpf ihnen zürnt,⁴ weil sie den Schöpfer und den Herrn des Alls, in dem alles entstanden ist, weil sie diesen dem Geschaffenen zurechnen.

69.

And once also the Arians having lyingly asserted that Antony’s opinions were the same as theirs, he was displeased and wroth against them. Then being summoned by the bishops and all the brethren, he descended from the mountain, and having entered Alexandria ¹, he denounced the Arians, saying that their heresy was the last of all and a forerunner of Antichrist. And he taught the people that the Son of God was not a created being, neither had He come into being from non-existence, but that He was the Eternal Word and Wisdom of the Essence of the Father. And therefore it was impious to say, ‘there was a time when He was not,’ for the Word was always co-existent with the Father. Wherefore have no fellowship with the most impious Arians. For there is no communion between light and darkness ². For you are good Christians, but they, when they say that the Son of the Father, the Word of God, is a created being, differ in nought from the heathen, since they worship that which is created, rather than God the creator ³. But believe ye that the Creation itself is angry with them because they number the Creator, the Lord of all, by whom all things came into being, with those things which were originated.
