3. Recklessness of their proceedings.

P. 271 In this manner the impious are now proceeding, as heretofore, against the orthodox; giving proof of their malice and impiety amongst all men everywhere. For granting that they have accused Athanasius; yet what have the other Bishops done? On what grounds can they charge them? Has there been found in their case too the dead body of an Arsenius? Is there a Presbyter Macarius, or has a cup been broken amongst them? Is there a Meletian to play the hypocrite? No: but as their proceedings against the other Bishops shew the charges which they have brought against Athanasius, in all probability, to be false; so their attacks upon Athanasius make it plain, that their accusations of the other Bishops are unfounded likewise. This heresy has come forth upon the earth like some great monster, which not only injures the innocent with its words, as with teeth ¹; but it has also hired external power to assist it in its designs. And strange it is that, as I said before, no accusation is brought against any of them; or if any be accused, he is not brought to trial; or if a shew of enquiry be made, he is acquitted against evidence, while the convicting party is plotted against, rather than the culprit put to shame. Thus the whole party of them is full of idleness; and their spies, for Bishops ² they are not, are the vilest of them all. And if any one among them desire to become a Bishop, he is not told, ‘a Bishop must be blameless ³;’ but only, ‘Take up opinions contrary to Christ, and care not for manners. This will be sufficient to obtain favour for you, and friendship with the Emperor.’ Such is the character of those who support the tenets of Arius. And they who are zealous for the truth, however holy and pure they shew themselves, are yet, as I said before, made culprits, whenever these men choose, and on whatever pretences it may seem good to them to invent. The truth of this, as I before remarked, you may clearly gather from their proceedings.

Dieses verüben jetzt die Gottlosen, wie sie es schon früher verübt haben, gegen die Rechtgläubigen; wodurch sie die Beweise ihrer Bosheit und Gottlosigkeit überall bei Allen verbreiten. Denn gesetzt, sie haben den Athanasius angeklagt, was haben denn die übrigen Bischöfe verbrochen? Welche Veranlassungen gaben sie, oder welcher Arsenius wurde bei ihnen todt gefunden? Was für ein Priester Makarius, oder welcher zerbrochene Kelch fand sich bei ihnen? Welcher Meletianer spielte eine Rolle? Aber wie aus ihren Handlungen erhellet und es sich zeigt, daß ihre Aussagen gegen den Athanasius falsch sind; so erhellet auch aus ihrem Verfahren gegen den Athanasius, daß auch die Beschuldigungen wider Andere erdichtet sind. Ein großes Ungeheuer ist über die Erde ausgegangen, nämlich diese Ketzerei; denn sie verletzt nicht bloß durch Worte wie durch Zähne die Unschuldigen, sondern miethete auch um Geld die äussere Gewalt zur Nachstellung. Und das Auffallende dabei ist, daß, wie ich schon sagte, Niemand aus ihnen angeklagt, oder wenn er angeklagt wird, nicht gerichtet wird, oder daß, wenn man ihn auf den Schein zur Rede stellt, diejenigen, welche ihn überführen, verurtheilt werden, und daß demjenigen, welcher überweiset, nachgestellt, der Schuldige aber nicht einmal beschämt wird. Bei ihnen also strotzen Alle von Unflath, und ihre kataskopoi (Spione), denn episkopoi (Bischöfe) dürfen sie nicht genannt werden, sind unfläthiger, als Alle. Und wenn bei ihnen Jemand Bischof werden will, S. 24 so hört er nicht die Worte:¹ „Ein Bischof muß untadelhaft seyn;“ sondern nur: Denke feindselig gegen Christum und kümmere dich nicht um den Wandel; denn dieses ist hinreichend, um dich zu empfehlen und ein Freund des Kaisers zu werden. So viel von denen, welche mit Arius gleiche Gesinnung haben. Die Eiferer für die Wahrheit aber werden, obschon sie heilig und rein sich zeigen, wie ich oben gesagt habe, dennoch für schuldig gehalten, wenn jene es wollen, und nach ihrem Gutdünken Verbrechen ersinnen. Dieses kann man, wie ich gesagt habe, aus ihren Handlungen ersehen.
