42. Persecution and Lapse of Hosius

But although they had done all this, yet these impious men thought they had accomplished nothing, so long as the great Hosius escaped their wicked machinations. And now P. 285 they undertook to extend their fury ¹ to that great old man. They felt no shame at the thought that he is the father ² of the Bishops; they regarded not that he had been a Confessor ³; they reverenced not the length of his Episcopate, in which he had continued more than sixty years; but they set aside everything, and looked only to the interests of their heresy, as being of a truth such as neither fear God, nor regard man ⁴. Accordingly they went to Constantius, and again employed such arguments as the following: ‘We have done everything; we have banished the Bishop of the Romans; and before him a very great number of other Bishops, and have filled every place with alarm. But these strong measures of yours are as nothing to us, nor is our success at all more secure, so long as Hosius remains. While he is in his own place, the rest also continue in their Churches, for he is able by his arguments and his faith to persuade all men against us. He is the president of Councils ⁵, and his letters are everywhere attended to. He it was who put forth the Nicene Confession, and proclaimed everywhere that the Arians were heretics. If therefore he is suffered to remain, the banishment of the rest is of no avail, for our heresy will be destroyed. Begin then to persecute him also and spare him not, ancient as he is. Our heresy knows not to honour even the hoary hairs of the aged.’

Nach so großen und so vielen Verbrechen glaubten die Gottlosen noch nichts gethan zu haben, so lange der große Hosius ihre Bosheit nicht gefühlt hätte. Denn auch auf diesen so ehrwürdigen Greis suchten sie ihre Wuth auszudehnen; es erfüllte sie nicht mit Scheu der Umstand, daß er der Vater der Bischöfe war, nicht mit Verehrung die Rücksicht darauf, daß er Bekenner war, nicht mit Achtung die lange Dauer seiner Amtsführung, weil er mehr als sechzig Jahre das Amt eines Bischofes verwaltet hatte; sondern sie setzten Alles hintan, und hatten nur die Ketzerei im Auge, als Menschen, welche wirklich weder Gott fürchten, noch vor einem Menschen sich scheuen. Sie gingen also zum Constantius, und bedienten sich abermals folgender Worte: S. 63 Wir haben Alles gethan; wir haben den römischen Bischof verbannt, und vor ihm sehr viele andere Bischöfe; wir haben alle Gegenden mit Furcht erfüllt. Aber deine so großen Thaten nützen uns nichts, und es ist von uns noch nichts zu Stande gebracht, so lange Hosius übrig ist. Denn so lange dieser unter den Seinigen ist, verbleiben Alle in ihren Kirchen; denn er kann durch sein Wort und seinen Glauben Alle gegen uns verleiten. Dieser führt auch den Vorsitz bei den Synoden, und seinen Schreiben gehorcht man überall. Dieser hat das nicäische Glaubensbekenntniß verfaßt, und überall verkündet, daß die Arianer Ketzer seyen. Wenn also dieser bleibt, so ist die Verbannung der Uebrigen vergebens; denn unsere Sekte wird verdrängt. Beginne also auch diesen zu verfolgen, und habe mit ihm, obschon er Greis ist, kein Mitleid; denn unsere Sekte weiß auch die grauen Haare der Greise nicht zu ehren.
