Basil: But those who do know the truth will be surprised.

Chrysostom: And lo! these are they who, according to you, falsely accuse me of vainglory and pride. Whence then am I to hope for praise? From the many? They do not know the actual fact. From the few? Here again the matter is perverted to my disadvantage. For the only reason why you have come here now is to learn what answer ought to be given to them. And what shall I now certainly say on account of these things? For wait a little, and you will clearly perceive that even if all know the truth they ought not to condemn me for pride and love of glory. And in addition to this there is another consideration: that not only those who make this venture, if there be any such (which for my part I do not believe), but also those who suspect it of others, will be involved in no small danger.

BASILE. Mais aussi ceux qui sauront la vérité t’admireront.

CHRYSOSTOME. Mais ne m’as-tu pas dit qu’ils m’accusaient de vanité et d’orgueil? De qui donc puis-je espérer l’approbation? De la multitude? Elle ignore ce qui s’est passé. De quelques individus mieux informés? Mais de ce côté-là les choses ont tourné tout autrement; car le seul motif qui t’amène ici maintenant, c’est d’apprendre ce qu’il faut leur répondre. Du reste, à quoi bon insister là-dessus avec tant de soin, puisque, quand même tout le monde serait instruit de la vérité, on ne devrait pour cela m’accuser ni d’orgueil ni de vanité; un peu de patience, et je te ferai voir cela clairement. En outre tu comprendras que, non-seulement ceux qui ont du sacerdoce une idée si téméraire (s’il y en a, ce que je ne crois pas pour ma part), mais encore ceux qui attribuent gratuitement cette témérité aux autres, s’exposent à un danger terrible.
