Hear also what he says in his charge to his disciple: ¹ "Give heed to reading, to exhortation, to teaching," and he goes on to show the usefulness of this by adding, "For in doing this thou shalt save both thyself and them that hear thee." ² And again he says, "The Lord's servant must not strive, but be gentle towards all, apt to teach, forbearing;" ³ and he proceeds to say, "But abide thou in the things which thou hast learned, and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them, and that from a babe thou hast known the sacred writings which are able to make thee wise unto salvation," ⁴ and again, "Every Scripture is inspired of God, and also profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for instruction which is in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete." ⁵ Hear what he adds further in his directions to Titus about the appointment of bishops. "The bishop," he says, "must be holding to the faithful word which is according to the teaching, that he may be able to convict the gainsayers." ⁶ But how shall any one who is unskillful as these men pretend, be able to convict the gainsayers and stop their mouths? or what need is there to give attention to reading and to the Holy Scriptures, if such a state of unskillfulness is to be welcome among us? Such arguments are mere makeshifts and pretexts, the marks of idleness and sloth. But some one will say, "it is to the priests that these charges are given:"--certainly, for they are the subjects of our discourse. But that the apostle gives the same charge to the laity, hear what he says in another epistle to other than the priesthood: "Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom," ⁷ and again, "Let your speech be always with grace seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer each one," ⁸ and there is a general charge to all that they "be ready to" ⁹ render an account of their faith, and to the Thessalonians, he gives the following command: "Build each other up, even as also ye do." ¹⁰ But when he speaks of priests he says, "Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in the word, and in teaching." ¹¹ For this is the perfection of teaching when the teachers both by what they do, and by what they say as well, bring their disciples to that blessed state of life which Christ appointed for them. For example alone is not enough to instruct others. Nor do I say this of myself; it is our Saviour's own word. "For whosoever shall do and teach them, he shall be called great. ¹² Now if doing were the same as teaching, the second word here would be superfluous; and it had been enough to have said "whosoever shall do" simply. But now by distinguishing the two, he shows that practice is one thing, and doctrine another, and that each needs the help of the others in order to complete edification. Thou hearest too what the chosen vessel of Christ says to the Ephesian elders: "Wherefore watch ye, remembering that for the space of three years, I ceased not to admonish every one, night and day, with tears." ¹³ But what need was there for his tears or for admonition by word of mouth, while his life as an apostle was so illustrious? His holy life might be a great inducement to men to keep the commandments, yet I dare not say that it alone could accomplish everything.

Ecoute encore dans quels termes Paul écrit à son disciple : Applique-toi d la lecture, à l’exhortation, à l’instruction. Et pour lui montrer le fruit qu’il en retirera, il ajoute : Par là, tu te sauveras, toi et ceux qui t’écoutent. (I Tim. V, 16.) Et ailleurs : il ne faut pas qu’un serviteur du Seigneur dispute; mais qu’il soit doux envers tout le monde, capable d’instruire, patient. (II Tim. IV, 16.) Et poursuivant il dit : Pour toi, demeure ferme dans ce que tu as appris et qui t’a été confié; sachant de qui tu l’as appris; te souvenant que dès ton enfance, tu as été instruit des lettres saintes qui peuvent t’éclairer pour le salut. (II. Tim. III, 14, 15.) Et encore : Toute écriture divinement inspirée est utile pour enseigner, pour reprendre, pour corriger, pour former à la justice, afin que l’homme de Dieu soit parfait. (II. Tim. III, 16.)

Ecoute encore ce qu’il dit à Tite sur l’ordination des évêques : Il faut qu’un évêque soit attaché à la vraie parole, à celle qui est conforme â l’enseignement, afin qu’il puisse convaincre les contradicteurs. (Tit. I, 9.) Comment donc un ignorant pourra-t-il convaincre les contradicteurs de la vraie foi et leur fermer la bouche? A quoi bon s’appliquer à la lecture et aux Ecritures, s’il faut s’en tenir à cette ignorance? Vaines excuses et faux prétextes que tout cela, derrière lesquels voudraient s’abriter la paresse et l’indolence.

Mais, me dit-on, ces conseils s’adressent aux prêtres. Je réponds d’abord que c’est bien d’eux (605) qu’il est ici question. Mais j’ajoute qu’ils s’adressent en même temps aux simples fidèles, car, écoute ce que l’Apôtre dit dans une autre épître, parlant cette fois non plus seulement aux prêtres, mais à tout le monde: Que la parole du Christ habite en vous abondamment avec toute sagesse (Coloss. III, 16); et encore : Que toutes vos paroles soient accompagnées de grâce, et assaisonnées du sel de la sagesse, en sorte que vous sachiez répondre à chacun comme il convient. (Coloss. IV, 6.) Or le précepte d’être prêt à répondre regarde tout le monde. Ecrivant aux Thessaloniciens, il dit : Edifiez-vous les uns les autres, comme vous le faites. (I. Thess. V, 11.) Quand il parle des prêtres, voici ce qu’il dit : Que les prêtres qui gouvernent bien soient doublement honorés, principalement ceux qui travaillent à la prédication et à l’instruction. (I. Tim. V, 17.) Car le dernier terme de la perfection est atteint dans l’instruction lorsque, par leurs exemples comme par leurs paroles, les prédicateurs conduisent les hommes à la vie bienheureuse préparée par Jésus-Christ. Les exemples seuls ne suffisent pas pour instruire: ce n’est pas moi qui le dis, c’est le Sauveur lui-même : Celui, dit-il, qui pratiquera et qui enseignera, sera appelé grand. (Matth. V, 19.) Si pratiquer c’était la même chose qu’instruire, il eût été superflu d’ajouter le second; il eût suffi de dire, celui qui pratiquera. Mais en les divisant, Notre-Seigneur nous apprend que les oeuvres ne sont pas la parole; et que pour édifier parfaitement les peuples, l’exemple et le discours doivent se prêter un mutuel secours. N’entends-tu pas ce que dit aux prêtres d’Ephèse ce vase d’élection du Christ: Veillez donc, et n’oubliez pas que durant trois ans, nuit et jour, je n’ai pas cessé d’avertir avec larmes chacun de vous. (Act. XX, 31.) Pourquoi ces larmes, ces discours, ces avertissements alors que l’éclat de sa vie apostolique était si vif? Sans doute que le bon exemple contribue beaucoup à l’accomplissement des commandements ; toutefois, même en cette partie, je n’oserai dire qu’il suffise tout seul.
