Against Hermogenes

Chapter XLIV.--Curious Views Respecting God's Method of Working with Matter Exposed. Discrepancies in the Heretic's Opinion About God's Local Relation to Matter.

But it remains that I should show also how you make God work. You are plainly enough at variance with the philosophers; but neither are you in accord with the prophets. The Stoics maintain that God pervaded Matter, just as honey the honeycomb. You, however, affirm that it is not by pervading Matter that God makes the world, but simply by appearing, and approaching it, just as beauty affects ¹ a thing by simply appearing, and a loadstone by approaching it. Now what similarity is there in God forming the world, and beauty wounding a soul, or a magnet attracting iron? For even if God appeared to Matter, He yet did not wound it, as beauty does the soul; if, again, He approached it, He yet did not cohere to it, as the magnet does to the iron. Suppose, however, that your examples are suitable ones. Then, of course, ² it was by appearing and approaching to Matter that God made the world, and He made it when He appeared and when He approached to it. Therefore, since He had not made it before then, ³ He had neither appeared nor approached to it. Now, by whom can it be believed that God had not appeared to Matter--of the same nature as it even was owing to its eternity? Or that He had been at a distance from it--even He whom we believe to be existent everywhere, and everywhere apparent; whose praises all things chant, even inanimate things and things incorporeal, according to (the prophet) Daniel? ⁴ How immense the place, where God kept Himself so far aloof from Matter as to have neither appeared nor approached to it before the creation of the world! I suppose He journeyed to it from a long distance, as soon as He wished to appear and approach to it.

Il ne me reste plus qu'à montrer comment Dieu a opéré, selon toi. Ici tu t'éloignes des philosophes sans te rapprocher des prophètes. Les stoïciens veulent que Dieu ait coulé à travers la Matière comme le miel à travers les rayons. Mais toi, que dis-tu? Ce n'est pas en là pénétrant de toutes parts qu'il en a créé le monde, mais seulement en se montrant à elle, en s'approchant d'elle, ainsi que le fait la Beauté par sa seule apparition, ou comme le fait l'aimant par sa simple approche. Je le demande, qu'y a-t-il de commun entre Dieu qui crée le monde et la Beauté qui blesse les ames, ou l'aimant qui attire le fer? Car, en admettant que Dieu ait apparu à la Matière, toujours est-il qu'il ne la blessa point comme la Beauté blesse l'ame; en admettant qu'il se soit approché d'elle, toujours est-il qu'il ne s'attacha point à elle, comme le fer à l'aimant. Mais, je le veux bien, tes exemples vont à la question. S'il est vrai que ce soit en se montrant à la Matière, et en s'approchant d'elle que Dieu en tira le monde, il est certain qu'il ne le créa que depuis qu'il se montra à la matière et s'en approcha. Par conséquent, il ne s'était ni montré à elle ni approché d'elle avant de l'avoir créée. Mais qui croira que Dieu ne se fût jamais rendu visible à la Matière, ne fût-ce que par la raison qu'elle lui était consubstantielle de toute éternité? Quoi! il aura toujours été loin d'elle celui qui est présent partout, qui remplit tout, et dont les êtres inanimés et incorporels chantent les louanges dans le prophète Daniel! Qu'il était immense le lieu dans lequel Dieu était assez éloigné de la Matière pour que jamais il ne se soit montré à elle ou ne s'en soit approché! En vérité, il lui a fallu faire bien du chemin le jour où il voulut lui apparaître pour la première fois et s'en approcher!
