En attendant, il faut savoir que Sophia est aussi surnommée Terre et Mère, comme qui dirait Terre-Mère, et, chose plus ridicule encore, Esprit saint. Ils ont accordé à cet être femelle tous les honneurs, la barbe aussi sans doute, pour ne rien dire de plus. Mais d'ailleurs le Démiurgue, grâce à sa faiblesse originelle, puisqu'il n'était qu'un des animaux, savait si peu s'élever par la connaissance jusqu'aux choses spirituelles, que, s'imaginant être seul, il se parla ainsi à lui-même: « Je suis le Dieu, et d'autre que moi, il n'y en a pas. » Toutefois, il savait bien qu'il n'avait pas existé autrefois. Il comprenait donc qu'il avait été créé, et qu'un être créé suppose toujours un créateur quel qu'il soit? Par quel hasard lui semblait-il donc qu'il était seul, si, sans avoir même celte certitude, il soupçonnait au moins qu'il y avait quelque créateur?

Chapter XXI.--The Vanity as Well as Ignorance of the Demiurge. Absurd Results from So Imperfect a Condition.
Meanwhile you must believe 1 that Sophia has the surnames of earth and of Mother--"Mother-Earth," of course--and (what may excite your laughter still more heartily) even Holy Spirit. In this way they have conferred all honour on that female, I suppose even a beard, not to say other things. Besides, 2 the Demiurge had so little mastery over things, 3 on the score, 4 you must know, 5 of his inability to approach spiritual essences, (constituted as he was) of animal elements, that, imagining himself to be the only being, he uttered this soliloquy: "I am God, and beside me there is none else." 6 But for all that, he at least was aware that he had not himself existed before. He understood, therefore, that he had been created, and that there must be a creator of a creature of some sort or other. How happens it, then, that he seemed to himself to be the only being, notwithstanding his uncertainty, and although he had, at any rate, some suspicion of the existence of some creator?
