12. Was hat Gott vor Erschaffung der Welt getan?

Siehe, ich antworte nun dem, der fragt: „Was tat Gott, bevor er Himmel und Erde schuf?“ Ich gebe ihm nicht die Antwort, die ein anderer gegeben hat, der der schwierigen Frage mit einem Scherze zu entgehen suchte. „Höllen“, so sprach er, „bereitete er da für die, die so hohe Geheimnisse ergründen wollen. Ein anderes ist wissen, ein anderes witzeln. Diese Antwort will ich deshalb nicht geben. Lieber möchte ich sagen: „Was ich nicht weiß, das weiß ich nicht“, als eine Antwort geben, die den zum Spotte macht, der nach so tiefen Geheimnissen fragt, aber dem Spötter selbst Lob einbringt. Aber ich nenne dich, unsern Gott, den Schöpfer der ganzen Schöpfung. Und wenn Himmel und Erde der Inbegriff der ganzen Schöpfung sind, so sage ich kühn: „Bevor Gott Himmel und Erde schuf, tat er nichts. Denn wenn er etwas getan hätte, so hätte er nur ein Geschöpf S. 281 erschaffen können“. O wüßte ich doch alles, was ich zu meinem Nutzen zu wissen begehre, so gut, wie ich weiß, daß kein Geschöpf geschaffen wurde, bevor die Schöpfung stattfand.

Chapter XII.--What God Did Before the Creation of the World.

14. Behold, I answer to him who asks, "What was God doing before He made heaven and earth?" I answer not, as a certain person is reported to have done facetiously (avoiding the pressure of the question), "He was preparing hell," saith he, "for those who pry into mysteries." It is one thing to perceive, another to laugh,--these things I answer not. For more willingly would I have answered, "I know not what I know not," than that I should make him a laughing-stock who asketh deep things, and gain praise as one who answereth false things. But I say that Thou, our God, art the Creator of every creature; and if by the term "heaven and earth" every creature is understood, I boldly say, "That before God made heaven and earth, He made not anything. For if He did, what did He make unless the creature?" And would that I knew whatever I desire to know to my advantage, as I know that no creature was made before any creature was made.
