19. Sein Staunen, wie wohl Gott uns die Zukunft lehre.

Du also, Beherrscher deiner Schöpfung, in welcher Weise lehrst du die Seelen das Zukünftige? Du hast es S. 288 ja deine Propheten gelehrt. Welches ist die Art, wie du, für den es keine Zukunft gibt, die Zukunft lehrst? Oder lehrst du vielmehr die Zukunft wie etwas Gegenwärtiges? Denn was nicht ist, kann natürlich auch nicht gelehrt werden. Zu hoch ist diese Weise für meinen Verstand und zu schwer, und „ich vermag es nicht, mich zu ihr zu erheben“¹. Aber ich vermag es wohl durch dich, wenn du es mir verleihest, du süßes „Licht meines inneren Auges“².

Chapter XIX.--We are Ignorant in What Manner God Teaches Future Things.

25. Thou, therefore, Ruler of Thy creatures, what is the method by which Thou teachest souls those things which are future? For Thou hast taught Thy prophets. What is that way by which Thou, to whom nothing is future, dost teach future things; or rather of future things dost teach present? For what is not, of a certainty cannot be taught. Too far is this way from my view; it is too mighty for me, I cannot attain unto it; ¹ but by Thee I shall be enabled, when Thou shalt have granted it, sweet light of my hidden eyes.
