CHAPITRE PREMIER. INVOCATION. — GRATUITE MUNIFICENCE DE DIEU.

1. Je vous invoque, ô mon Créateur, mon Dieu et ma miséricorde, qui avez gardé mon souvenir quand j’avais perdu le vôtre. Je vous appelle dans mon âme, et vous la préparez à vous recevoir en lui inspirant ce vif désir de votre possession. Oh! répondez aujourd’hui à cet appel que vous avez devancé, quand vos cris réitérés, venant de si loin à mon oreille, me pressaient de me retourner et d’appeler à moi Celui qui m’appelait à lui. Seigneur, vous avez effacé tous mes péchés, afin de n’avoir point à solder les oeuvres de mon infidélité, et vous avez prévenu mes oeuvres méritantes, afin de me rendre selon le bien opéré en moi par vos mains, dont je suis l’ouvrage. Car vous étiez avant que je fusse, et je n’étais rien à qui vous pussiez donner d’être. Et me voilà toutefois, je suis par votre bonté qui a devancé tout ce que vous m’avez donné d’être, tout ce dont vous m’avez fait. Vous n’aviez pas besoin de moi, et je ne suis pas tel que ce peu de bien que je suis vous seconde, mon Seigneur et mon Dieu; que mes services vous soulagent, comme si vous vous lassiez en agissant; que votre puissance souffrit de l’absence de mon hommage; que vous réclamiez mon culte, comme la terre réclame ma culture, sous peine de stérilité; mais vous voulez mes soins, vous voulez mon culte, afin que je trouve en vous le bien de mon être; car vous m’avez donné l’être qui me rend capable de ce bien.

Chapter I.--He Calls Upon God, and Proposes to Himself to Worship Him.

1. I Call upon Thee, my God, my mercy, who madest me, and who didst not forget me, though forgetful of Thee. I call Thee into ¹ my soul, which by the desire which Thou inspirest in it Thou preparest for Thy reception. Do not Thou forsake me calling upon Thee, who didst anticipate me before I called, and didst importunately urge with manifold calls that I should hear Thee from afar, and be converted, and call upon Thee who calledst me. For Thou, O Lord, hast blotted out all my evil deserts, that Thou mightest not repay into my hands wherewith I have fallen from Thee, and Thou hast anticipated all my good deserts, that Thou mightest repay into Thy hands wherewith Thou madest me; because before I was, Thou wast, nor was I [anything] to which Thou mightest grant being. And yet behold, I am, out of Thy goodness, anticipating all this which Thou hast made me, and of which Thou hast made me. For neither hadst Thou stood in need of me, nor am I such a good as to be helpful unto Thee, ² my Lord and God; not that I may so serve Thee as though Thou wert fatigued in working, or lest Thy power may be less if lacking my assistance nor that, like the land, I may so cultivate Thee that Thou wouldest be uncultivated did I cultivate Thee not but that I may serve and worship Thee, to the end that I may have well-being from Thee; from whom it is that I am one susceptible of well-being.
